Oh you're right. That definitely does make it way better, as in it goes from trash to useful, but it's still not worth much in terms of character strength like most hypers. Everything looks worthless compared to Ubiqutous.
Hypers are usually just a small bonus for characters, rather than a defining feature of them because of their inconsistency.

Yes, leveling them up makes them significantly better as well, so get grinding.
If you don't have anything, a good way to start is to just go Offensive + character with defense or Defensive + character with attack. That way you'll get a well rounded character which isn't bad.
Also don't trust the "Suggestions" from the devs too much (As in the letter grading they give for characters). They're usually based off of the character's stats and nothing else. For example support Kyoko is great despite being horribly rated by the game because of her evasion stat.

Suguri if you want unique gameplay and music, QP shooting if you want traditionnal bullet hell

Do you like bullet hell? Because that's the genre they all fall into.
QP shooting dangerous is probably the easiest to grasp but you'll come away perplexed at the story even if you know what happened in the original QPS since it's mostly nonsensical. Original qps is only in japanese. Same deal for xmas shooting scramble and it's original XMS.
Flying red barrel is pretty straightforward but youd have to pony up to rockin android so just sky pirate it since they refuse to sell it anymore.
Suguri and sora are their most serious stories. Plays differently from traditional bullet hell so you'll need to adjust.
200% is a pokemon like spinoff side story that youd appreciate more if you already know the characters.

Sumika was just playing, and everyone came out of it fine because Sugu was there, and of course befriended Sumika.

First off AoS only has Suguri/Sora characters, so that means you're missing out on a lot of the potential cast! (Although I know AoSX had QP in it for some reason).
Secondly, while I think AoS is fun, I like fighting games that actually have blocking more. I'm not a big fan of games where meter is basically your only way of having any defense.

Blocking is for basic bitches and cowards, you either hit them or don't get hit.

Having no blocking makes things feel way too unga bunga though.
In normal fighting games blocking adds a lot because you need to know when to cut your losses and realize you need to start blocking. It also adds a lot of depth in footsies because you can play around the idea of blocking and then countering your opponent if you think they'll do something risky/unsafe.
In AoS when you start getting hit or you're in a bad position your answer is to mash supers or burst, which basically means meter management replaces defense. In footsies it means that your best option if you think your opponent might be able to hit you is to just mash your own attacks or commit to a dash instead.
In AoS there's basically no reason not to be attacking non-stop, not only because you can't block but also because your defense is tied to meter. The ability to be patient and wait adds a lot to fighters.

I know what you're trying to say (no block/guard pressures phases like traditional fighting games) but defense shapes in some other forms than meters in AoS2 : blocking your opponent with ballistics (missiles) or shield-like projectiles (Kyoko's far spA for instance), dashing away and grazing, counters with beams (like Sugu's tapA) or melee attacks (especially Mira who has i-frames), ...

I'd attribute that more to neutral/zoning than defense/footsies game.

Not attacking sometimes really IS mandatory, because :
- first, your attacks still have recovery so you can be punished for spamming
- depending on what you shoot, your opponent can get more meters if they graze without attacking, they'll recover their red health too
- attacking all the time means dash cancelling all the times which means raising your heat, and you don't want that

Not really, when you're getting hit you need to know when you have to dash cancel your hitstun and then counter if you think the other player is trying to go for a stagger, just dash away if you don't, throw a shield/hyper if you're afraid.
However shields and hypers are readable (even halfshields) and can be broken, and as you pointed out, meter management is super important so bad decision will leave you with no meter.

Except every attacks doesn't works against every others (ballitstics gets destroyed by melee or beams, melee can be countered by projectiles, beams are dashable and easy to punish, ...)+you still have the option to halfshield to go through any other attack (or read an halfshield and try to break it), footsies also depends on where the characters are because if one is hugging the wall they'll have less good options.
I'm not saying it's the same, or deeper or not than traditonal fgs,but you can't say footsies are summarized by one best option that is attack or not imo.
