People become aware of it, and go "Ah, I see, furries like being animal people". Then, they come across someone who likes beastfolk, and go "Wait, why do they like these beastfolk things? Ah, they must be a furry! And furries are degenerates. So, I guess this person is a degenerate."
That's how an external group can ruin something. I think Ronso, Khajit and stuff like that are dope, but the taint of furries can't be washed off of the concept of beastfolk.
