No. You can't have the christian devil in a setting with no christian religion. The witcher games are set in a world where polytheism is predominant and there is no christian faith present.

At least some encosmic demon god.

GAUNTER
O
DIM
G.O.D

I don't know, maybe he is THE demon of time

He is Le Slavic Myth and Fairytales Devil not the biblical one

No, he's but a supernatural faustian bargainer, a demon if you will

youtube.com/watch?v=4vE84iupsI8

Just a random demon .

can ciri beat him?

...

>random demon
he has full control over time. just knowing his true identity condemns one to a fate worse than death. he plays by his own rules and kills anyone he feels like. they give this much power to random demons?

He's a demon within Platonism/Christian Platonism. Start with Chapter 14 here:
newadvent.org/fathers/120108.htm

Augustine goes through the Platonic and Christian view of demons which he'd fit in as.

They managed it in Narnia.

>and there is no christian faith present.

What is the Church of Eternal Fire meant to be then?

>is he supposed to be satan?
no, he just seeks to know more things that can change the nature of a man

Attached: 1544808377896.jpg (856x1045, 197K)

babies first mephisto

>he has full control over time.
That's an illusion.
>just knowing his true identity condemns
Knowing his real name is a demon's main weakness.

Obviously not in the Witcher universe, he's more of a very powerful and ancient demon there. But his role in the story is effectively the Devil, so metaphorically yes.

>illusion
citation needed

it's a mashup, multiple bits from polish folklore with some original content and a decent bit of tragedy. there was this little polish legend about the guy who sells his soul to the devil only to trick him over and over again, i guess that devil would be a base for o'dimm. you can read about that here if you're bored enough

culture.pl/en/article/pan-twardowski-the-first-pole-on-the-moon

He stopped time in 1 room.

how do you know rest of the world wasn't affected? we're only shown the one room, and even that is an impressive feat. also you admit he stopped time instead of saying illusion this time

>aslan

Yes, the story is heavily based on the accounts of the first man on the moon, Mr. Twardowski. look him up

there's no actual proof anyone ever went to the moon.

His name could be mocking god

Read up on the lore, normal demons aren't that strong

There are so many of them too, fuck off you insipid, retarded cunt

Never got around to playing the DLCs even though I own the complete edition on PS4. I recently upgraded my PC and would much rather play them on that, but is starting the DLCs separately rather than continuing from a save file a good way to experience them?

No, he's a post-conjunction creature.

Heart of Stone before the battle to defend Ciri, Blood and Wine after the games end.

Also download a few balance mods.A mod that make it so quest exp doesn't scale with level so you dont get like 2exp from quests that are 3 levels below you, and a mod that better scales enemies to you so the game doesn't become too easy.

Also the console command mod so you can do various things like make characters naked.
mmo-game.eu/witcher-3-debug-console-commands/

>Also the console command mod so you can do various things like make characters naked.
why would i ever want to do this? are you an incel?

Underrated post

Who gives a shit what you want, the important thing is you can do it cause it's fun. If your idea of a fun time is something else, mods and console commands can probably help you do it. Unless you are a retarded purist, in which I am sure some corporation is ready for you to guzzle their cum.

hehe upset porn addicted incel is upset

Yes, he's the devil. Anyone who says otherwise is either having a giggle or an "AKSHAWLY THEY'RE WYVERNS NOT DRAGONS"fag

I am not even the original user you are trying to bait you literal nigger, I just like mods

i guess this is what I get for having the audacity to help someone

ignore my post, play the dlc as soon as its available and don't download any mods that enhance the game

t. upset, porn-addicted incels

tell em queen

He is Satan in a world with no good counterpart making him effectively God... damn...

i just did

huh?

Yeah, starting the Hearts of Stone will make Blood and Wine accessible in that same save file. Also, you'll be able to complete most side quests in the game.

BTW Don't listen to the autists who say to start HoS before the game ends. That's a terrible way to experience it and ruins the pacing of the entire ending phase.

hmm?

STFU you incel piece of shit. Go jerk off to your cringy anime waifus

YES haha get em

He gives evil people what's coming to them, but in doing so cares not for any collateral damage. I don't really know what that makes him. At the very least he isn't just 'evil incarnate', that's for sure.

he just did

was the bum in the tavern evil? he's clearly just an agent of chaos. he's literally a demon.

uh...

yuh...

Collateral damage, shouldn't have bothered him.

He breaks contract though, he's not a normal demon.
He kills that guy with the spoon for no reason, no deal was struck, just murders him out of petty annoyance in what was the worst written part of G.O.D.'s character. That and killing that ghost randomly at the end of the wedding, again with no deal sealed, just directly intervenes into the world.

The worst written part is that he named time as the 4th dimension, which is bullshit. Makes him look like a total idiot with just one line.

why wouldn't time be the 4th dimension? do you have a better idea?

Geraldo is God

I don't care if he is dumb, as long as he is consistent.
If he can directly intervene in the world, none of the plot makes sense. He's supposed to be making deals and monkey paw-ing people.

Time is the fourth dimension of space, as seen in spacetime theory, that has shown to have predictive power and is thus probably true.

Only Hearts of Stone is worth playing in my opinion. You should only bother with blood and wine if by some ungodly reason you're not sick of the game and want more.

Both the DLCs are better than the base game, and both are worth a play if you like the base game.

i don't understand this meme, I don't even look at porn and I'm engaged

i'm too old for this

>Things cannot exist if there are no people who believe in them
Dumbass.

Nah, he's le epic so clever twist man

Saint Lebioda is a better fit for a poor preacher who spread the word of peace. I think it is a better fit.

Doesn't mean much when the game is absolutely barren from compelling mechanics or exploration, all the game has going for it is the narrative, which is bland most of the time, hearts of Stone is one of there exceptions. Blood and wine didn't stand out at all, aside from the clear effort they put into creating a new area and new enemies, I was sick of the game 20 hours In and only managed to push to finish all three main questlines because I wanted to know how they developed. Out of the three only Hearts of Stone was any good.

>t. contrarian pleb
Gaunter is fucking based and a literary calibre villain.

isnt funny how i remember this dlc more fondly than the main game itself.

Time is not measurable in distance, which makes it NOT a dimension.

and why would it have to be measurable in distance?

Our know 3 dimensions are, why wouldn't the last one be? The 4th dimension would theoretically just be an 'angle' added to the length, width and height we already know.

just seems like limited thinking m8

Those are the three dimensions of space, but for an object to move from any place to another a fourth dimension is needed. Time. This is why there’s a fundamental difference between space and space-time.

>You can't have the christian devil in a setting with no christian religion
why not?
Satan has many synonymous polytheistic idols. In fact, Satan is arguable named after saturn.

>Time is not measurable in distance
>implying

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minkowski_space
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacetime

Time is the fourth dimension of space.
Read up on spacetime. Stop spewing garbage.

>for no reason
He was rude! Manners maketh the man.

Think of it this way. By removing the 3rd dimension we would be left with 2. If we assume only length and width remained, how could anyone living in a world that looked like that even imagine what the 3rd dimension looked like? In that world there would probably be people calling time the '3rd dimension'. In that same way, we can not really imagine what a 4th dimension would look like, though attempts have been made to theorize it.
youtube.com/watch?v=cNvt-98JWN8

i don't even play this game but i watched this on youtube

how do you know him killing the dude with a spoon isn't an illusion in itself? even the bitcher doubts if he was really manipulating time or just creating an illusion. this fella has a reason to pretend to be more influential than he really is

>i don't even play this game
Then fuck off.

Thats rationalizing an obvious writer oversight. If we were discussing the Bible or something I'd go along with you for a ride. In a video game, no.

oh sorry, brb
>plays the bitcher games
ok i just played all the bitcher games. i now can afford an opinion

The idea of a 4th spatial dimension proves Plato is right and Hume was wrong. You can't empirically know what a 4th spatial dimension would *look* like because all empirical facts can only be experienced in a three spatial dimension manifold, but you can intellectively *know* through mathematics and reason what a 4th spatial dimension would be.

some other dimensions may be include "the will of nature" itself.

Because after the cut scene you play on with everyone in pub lamenting over his dead body with a spoon sticking out of it.

He isn't righteous in any capacity. He also fucked the guy that was simply researching him

The D is a dimension too.

Pretending to be retarded or legitimately retarded?

Yes.

Attached: mindblown.gif (220x220, 1.69M)

Does the concept of a dimension even make sense with special and general relativism? All four dimensions are relative to each observer/object within them. Dimensions are derivative and infinite, only velocity and mass is fundamental.

Took me until my third playthrough that I noticed he kept stalking you everywhere throughout the game

Attached: 452.png (600x878, 598K)

Ever tried extinguishing all the candles in the Shakeslock encounter? Spooky stuff.

youtu.be/GnQPUAU7L1I?t=511

Because then it's not the Christian devil, but the source of its inspiration.

>fucking based

Attached: 1543086382009.jpg (411x418, 43K)

ditch the main game, is overhyped as fuck. HoS its a good ass dlc. it even managed to make the combat somewhat interesting, which is hard to do believe me.

How is he not? Nigga gets one over on everyone, flirts with gilfs at the wedding, always slipping into the action and saying something snarky to Geralt, has an epic gingerbread recipe. Fucking lad is what he is.

>Satan is arguable named after saturn
I finally understand...

Attached: SS.gif (480x270, 1.93M)

He's a God, Gaunter O' Dim - G.O.D.

He's not the Christian god or devil but presumably one of several gods, in the way Greek mythology is or whatever, hence being immortal but can still be tricked and outsmarted.

He's just a folkloric demon.
He's a combination of traits from different fairytales and old stories.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_Twardowski
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_of_Stone_(German_fairy_tale)

Fairytales almost never have totally coherent internal logic, the fact that he has power over time and shit doesn't mean he needs to secretly be an eldrich god or some other important puzzle-piece to the logic of the universe.
Have none of you read a fucking fairytale in your lives?

Could you be any more of a cringy tourist?

Yes. The Polish story he's taken from literally has him as the devil.

>Satan is arguable named after saturn.
It's the anglo pronunciation of shaitan, which is a word that means 'adversary; against in a negative fashion'

He's just a baker who learned some advanced techniques

Because Satan is real he pre-exists any human conception of demons or Satan.

>he fact that he has power over time and shit doesn't mean he needs to secretly be an eldrich god or some other important puzzle-piece to the logic of the universe.
Did you not beat HoS?

>Have none of you read a fucking fairytale in your lives?
As a pre-modern peasant, fairytales taught me the revenge fantasies against my heartless step-mother that inspired me to endure the meaningless drudgery of awful life.

My real mother died of a finger cut infection (no penicillin).

no u

As a bookfag I enjoyed Blood and Wine because it had Regis in it, but hearts of stone done great job adding a lot of polish folklore.

youtube.com/watch?v=pQHsmiFJqJc

Seriously why would Geralt risk his SOUL for the sake of some fuckass who's just getting what he deserves? Is he that desperate to dab on the devil?

it would be kind of a lackluster ending for the player if he didn't

Well, his whole life is about killing monsters.

yes he is.

1. hearts of stone has parts of goethes faust where the devil is the main antagonist
2. when geralt meets the blind man, he tells him that the man of mirrors is evil in person
3. they point out that without good there wouldn't be bad. This being mentioned in relation to man of mirrors points to him being one end of spectrum
4. in european folklore the devil commonly is the source evil. goethes faust being the most obvious connection between hearts of stones as it's the most famous story where the devil makes a contract with a human to get his soul.

Anyone saying it is not the devil has no clue about european folklore. His name is clearly mocking god and possible he sees himself as a god. Him playing carelessly and disrespectful with the skull at the shows that he is not just some demon. He is clearly the devil himself. Demon is a servant, who wouldn't have reason to toy with the skull. It wouldn't have meaning to a demon. It is the devil who seeks every possibility to mock life and caring about nothing. Because he stands above everything else in the evil spectrum. He is the evil.

Hearts of Stone mirrors legend of "Pan Twardowski", polish spin of Faust. In such case he is a "diabeł" aka fallen angel aka demon.

it's the players choice and leads to an unfitting ending, so the player gets punished. If you fight the devil the ending becomes surreal. With Olgrieth having lost everything and having been a giant idiot and asshole in the past who is hated and hunted by almost everyone "starting a new life" is just stupid. It's absolutely a fake ending "cartoony" ending.

The not intervening with the devil ending is much more beliveable and feels true to the whole expansion

The devil was once an angel. I am bad at bible stuff, but that I know

He need contacts to obtain souls.

In folklore there's little distinction of 'a' devil and 'the' devil.
You can find versions of the same stories where it's one or the other.

>polish spin of Faust
spin off implies its comehow connected to or derived from the faust myth, which there is no proof that it is, almost every culture has some sort of devil myth

Egypt has a hell. Rome has a hell. Greece has a hell. Even the damn Babylonians have a hell.

>why would Geralt risk his SOUL
He wouldn't. In the DLC he's a generic witcher, not Geralt.

>If he can directly intervene in the world, none of the plot makes sense.
I don't see the problem. The devil is doing stuff out of sheer boredom. He is amused by trapping people into losing their souls to him, by offering them "what they want" not. Sure he could make the whole world burn, but that is not what he cares about.

How do you reason that?

well, what do you think the hearts of stones developers intention was with gaunter o dimm? A demon or the devil? What do you think?

"Gaunter O'Dimm, ***Master Mirror.***"
>his entire deal is reflections
>acronym GOD

He's god's reflection. Something like the devil from Christian mythology, yeah.

very good one. Didn't thought about that.

I think their intention was to be vague on purpose and not provide a definite answer to what O'Dimm is, because that's honestly more interesting.

It's like speculating exactly what kind of being Tom Bombadil is, no one is ever gonna come up with a good answer that isn't full of holes, because Tolkien didn't intend for there to be one.

Thats not at all what the plot or theme is about. They are about an outsider evil that can't directly do anything, but can seduce agents to act seemingly for good, but actually for evil. Tricking people by pulling on their flaws. Like loving a woman so much that you give her a faith worse than death, or loving your brother so much that you bring him out of the grave to be murdered again.

Why would Geralt risk his life for a random faggot? He just want live in peace wih his family.

Found this in the cdpr forums:
>he was not originally shown as "Gaunter O'Dimm" in the inn, though, but the dialogue was the same, so he already introduced himself as Gaunter O'Dimm. Also, the scene file of that conversation (which I do not think has changed since the original release) internally calls him "Mirror", while in the name of the file he is referenced as "Mephisto"

>Narnia
>no Christian religion present

That’s literally the whole point of the series

Why is it so fucking boring? The art is great though.

Attached: download.jpg (299x169, 9K)

okay according to texts on the internet nobody knows if mephisto in faust is the devil.
In whatever case, both gaunter o dimm and mephisto in faust sure act like the devil. They act as a prime being. Not all knowing, but above everything else.

>Release stand-alone cardgame
>Tons of OP strategies but legit very fun.
>Tons and tons of balance patches, slowly erode faction identity in the name of balance.
>Realise you've gone to far, announce a 6 month hiatus as you redesign the game.
>It's barely even gwent anymore, plays more like a shitty board game instead of a card game.

I don't know why they fucked it as much as they did.

The designer of Gwent left CDPR.

Yeah, I sure miss playing against Consume and Greatswords every single match for 4 months.

nu-gwent is just plain and dull.

All I cared about is getting a cool demon horse

Evil doesn't have a separate ontological font, there is no form of evil. Evil is a defect of good in a thing. Everything created that exists comes from God, the Form of the Good, alone. Evil is the use of a created thing to not be good, like an angel who uses his existence to work against God rather than as his servant, as was his purpose, form, and good.

Satan isn't a prime being, he is not an uncreated co-equal of God. Satan is a being amongst beings, created, who is not good.

That really updated my journal

It's some kind of devil with uber abilities able to fuck with the universe but limited by contracts'n'shit

>limited by contracts
Not at all, explain the drunk in the bar if that's the case.

>can't have a character based on Satan in a setting where every kingdom and society is based on Christian ones

Hes a RIP off of Randal flagg from Stephen king books

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_form_contract#Contracts_of_adhesion

Aslan is literally Jesus though. I don't mean "he's a REALLY strong allegory/metaphor for Christ", I mean actual literally.
At the end of the third book it's confirmed he's the same being that died on the cross in our world, and is a lion in Narnia.

Attached: 1560794517971.jpg (500x403, 71K)

Kinda, he is Evil Incarnate.

current state is the best it has been since beta
still boring though

I think it's just a coincidence desu. Or is it the same in all languages? It's certainly not in russian

I always thought he was just some super powerful demon like thing. Powerful enough to rival deities in the universe, like Melitele or the Lady of the Lake.

They changed his name in the Russian version? For what possible reason?

This.

they didn't change anything, you dip. he's still called Gaunter O'Dimm. Coincidentlly ГOД (Гюнтep O'Димм) doesn't mean God in russian
