Not necessarily, but like Sengoku Rance there are tons and tons of recruitable characters and character clears that you're unlikely to stumble upon without a guide.
I'd say it's tougher than Sengoku. Definitely worth checking out.

To finish the game? You might not get the best ending on your first playthrough, but it's not too hard to beat.
To five star characters? Dear god yes.

It has some bullshit for sure. At one point you get rushed by the enemy on the country map and they will fuck you up if you're unprepared or didn't do some event to prevent it from happening. It's also generally harder than Rance in general and some characters are xp traps while others have huge hidden potential.
It's a great game though, the MC is fucking great.

02 is awful. I don't know how much Kai improves it but the gameplay is so repetitive and boring.
