I think what put me off was how much you needed to be on the ball to deal with everyone's ungamentals. Cause a lot of it is real and if they get going it can be a pure guess. Certain moves in specific situations will do a slowmo effect and give you more combo opportunities. For example's Zasalamel's 66B will lethal hit if it counterhits an opponent who doesn't have a full bar of meter.

I can't think of a single CE that fits this description, they're all fairly well-balanced.

RE doesn't add nothing, it's intended as a defensive crutch for scrubs who can't deal with button mashing because they haven't memorized the hundreds of strings in 3D fighters. Even at higher levels it serves some purpose by encouraging movement instead of sitting in each other's faces taking turns attacking, which has been a problem in the past. It also encourages learning which moves are RE-safe. The only really annoying thing about it is that it takes too long to play out. If they could speed up the animations I'd have no complaints.

I'm not even sure why I stopped playing it, I just like playing other fighting games even more. I liked the lethal hits, didn't really like the reversal edge, but from the 25 hours I have logged in Steam I remember you got a shitload of bar from... Blocking it? Or parrying it? I honestly can't remember. I know something about it let you get loads of meter if you used it properly.

Yeah you used to get a pretty decent amount of meter by absorbing hits with it and landing it on the opponent. They nerfed that a few patches ago, and also made it so it uses up 20% of your guard gauge.

It has been nerfed since to not give as much meter but it still gives a lot. I've never had a massive problem with RE myself, most of the time opponents just throw it out in neutral so you can just sidestep it and do a lethal hit.

That's not really true, you can watch some tournament matches and you'll see plenty of movement. Back-stepping isn't as strong as Tekken but it's still good, and sidestepping is just as useful, maybe more. Moves still have pushback, and the strong defensive mechanics discourage people from just sitting at point-black trading blows. Whiff punishing is also strongly rewarded because you can get like 30% off a whiff punish lethal hit, which most characters have, and if you don't then CEs are great whiff punish tools too.

Also, neutral doesn't stop being neutral when characters are at close range.

For reference here's how I'd rank the roster, the general consensus is pretty close to this, though some people might put Garchomp at the top of mid rather then bottom high, or libre/braixen lower top rather then upper high. Gengar, Chandelure, and Shadow Mewtwo also vary quite a bit by person; the JP scene infamously thinks Gengar is high tier for instance.

Only Bottom tier and arguably Blaziken are really unviable in high level play, the rest of the cast makes top 8's with some frequency, though weavile for whatever reason doesn't have many placements due to how few people play him despite him universally being considered pretty solid.

If a game only has characters in A+ tier and A tier, everyone in A tier doesn't somehow become "shit tier" just because their tier is the lowest.
