PC shit

Hey Yea Forums, I want to buy a fairly cheap tower to play vidya with. I've already got a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I just want to play a few games like TF2 or Half Life without using the Orange Boxon my shitty xbox. I've got my eye on a pretty cheap tower but I have no fucking clue when it comes to things like this.

Did you research the processor?
If you're going to be playing older games it MIGHT not be a problem, but it never hurts to know what your processor can do.
What CAN hurt you is the form factor of your case, and the power supply. SFF cases need smaller cards to fit, and in addition, you need to keep track of what your wattage is. If you're working with a 240w Supply like most of these machines have, you'll be a bit more limited in how powerful of a graphics card you can get.

Do some research on some graphics cards with SFF brackets, and gauge how much they will cost you. Newer cards will cost as much or more than the box you're putting it in.

I'm not planning on buying any newer games, I have consoles for that. I mostly just plan on playing valves older stuff. But what processor should I get to have a smoother time playing?

The i5 on the computer should be fine enough. The question is the graphics card you'll want to use. That component is FAR more important to consider, even with older games.

The integrated card may be enough, but I will check the requirements of the games you want to play to be sure.

Reminder we share a board with people like OP in the current year

TF2 runs like shit on a good PC I'd hate to play it on that thing.

What do graphics cards do? From the name I assume they effect how things look but as long as the games don't look like melted plastic I'm fine with it

The cheapest solution for old games is Ryzen 2400G, it comes with integrated graphics that are "good enough" for the likes of TF2.

Build your own computer
you are paying a huge markup not doing so unless you buy literal throwaway shit

They allow you to see shit on your screen, though some CPUs come built in with integrated graphics so there won't always be a need to have a discrete graphics card.

just throw an SSD in that bad boy and you'll have a decent system. should be able to play source engine games and indies reasonably. as an IT wagie though i'd warn you against buying refurbs and expecting them to work really well out of the box.

PSU is probably proprietary, and case will be built around the system, so upgrades will be a no go, I wouldn't recommend it, look for a tower, that way you can replace the PSU if it's insufficient for a GPU upgrade, a processor like that is fine, it should play a lot of games pretty well, although you will really just find yourself a bit limited with some games.

Not OP but I learned that the hard way when I got a refurb box. I was expecting just to have to get a graphics card and some hard drives, but I ended up having to replace the CPU, get more RAM, and I still don't have the Graphics Card I really wanted yet because I didn't know about it when I first bought it.

Not that I'm upset: It was a good learning experience and I was able to figure things out when I choose to build from scratch in the future. Like not cheaping out even on a SFF graphics card.

Honestly, you couldn't build a pc for $150 with the same specs as that HP prebuilt. Those prebuilts are sourced and designed to be made one way, really cheaply and cost-effective. It would cost you more to source a case, mobo, psu, HDD, ram, and a cpu equivelant to an i5-3470 if you bought the parts seperately.
All in all, what you're looking at is a "good deal" for a pc with all those components included.
With that being said, don't buy it. Prebuilts like these have close to no expandability. They're designed to be built one way, and if you have enough dough someday to but a graphics card, tough cookie. The mobo doesn't have PCIE gen 3. Or you don't have the right PSU to even support a GPU. Or you don't have the space since it's built to be as space efficient as possible. Or the PSU it comes with is proprietary and doesn't have 8 pin cables. Or worse, all of the above.
TL;DR: It may seem like a good idea, but you will have little to no expandability, and will cost you more in the long run, because if you do decide to upgrade, you have to replace all the components aside from the ram/CPU anyway. Just save up a little more, buy used if you have to. Prebuilts like these aren't worth it in the end.

charge your phone, OP, jfc

Should be fine as long as you get a low profile graphics card. You're limited to 240 Watts but the most you'll likely pull is around 150-180 Watts.

>What CAN hurt you is the form factor of your case, and the power supply. SFF cases need smaller cards to fit
It's all a matter of perspective. gpu doesn't have to fit and you don't need to run the stock psu.
Having said that, this thing is going to be (if i ever finish it) a mame/bulk emulator machine and was always going to be hidden inside a cabinet, so looks were never a concern. I'll probably just make a sketchy box/cover or something to minimize dust.

Buy this and a 1050ti youll get what you want for like $300

You do not need a 1050ti for 10+ year old Source games

Get a Ryzen 3400G CPU, it has mpre than enough integrated graphics for what you're doing. You will need fast RAM to get the most of it though.

Lucky, though I probably would not have thought to do that with mine anyway. I live in a very small room, so I don't have the space to have an open build like that, so I have to work around the power limitation, or try to cut open the case.

My next upgrade will be a workstation GPU, since I'm using the box I'm working on for both work and older/indie gaming, and it doesn't use much power so I can squeeze it in onto a 240w.

Buy refurbished dell optiplex with at least 4460 and plug in at least used 7700 or 970

You need Linux to play games. Buy Gentoo or Arch Home Edition

get an xeon workstation pc and a 7970/7990/r9 290x if you want budget

that rig is always my go-to because 290x's are dirt cheap now
