Low poly and pixel only when it's indie nu-pixel shit.

Pixel art for sure

pixel

pixel you fucking nigger

pixel

>Voice acting means you're not able to use any party
Other than that, DS is most kino remake

I just got gifted Final fantasy 7 for iOS mobile. I’ve never played final fantasy 7... is it worth the time?

always low poly
2d games are soulless copouts for unskilled devs lately and I've grown to dislike them
there are some good ones though, dont get me wrong. however the majority is garbage

I think both are great. I've always loved pixel more, though.
It feels like there's no real ceiling with how great pixel can look as long as you have someone who has the time for it.
Though I think low poly works really well in horror games or racers

Attached: 2IBbvYv.gif (320x320, 152K)

Neither? This isn't 1998 I don't want either of those pieces of shit

I'm fine with 3D-style but not low poly, it just seem silly and ages like shit. Still traumatized from Wild Arms 1, combat should've been like the rest of the game.

Attached: 1359423744575.gif (478x428, 43K)

I love them both, to be honest. Though I'd probably lean more towards pixel/sprite

low poly has more soul, indie pixeltrash has retroactively ruined a lot of 16bit by association

Attached: 1542213577498.png (512x384, 269K)

pixel

low poly is garbo

>is the greatest game ever made worth my time

Attached: 1501494661183.gif (540x540, 1.59M)

That is the most soulful gif I have ever seen

not on mobile.. why would you want to play a 50 hour rpg on that shit

it depends on how well they're done
pixel art can easily look better than low poly, and low poly can easily look better than pixel art

why is that version of ff4 stuck on the DS

the fuck is wrong with the materia in that webm? emulated with too strong texture filtering? it's meant to be a circle

it's on steam ain't it

I think one issue of pixel art is people lean toward absurd levels of simplicity thinking that all games had characters with 0 shadows or darker colors.
I'm not saying every game has to have the most detailed sprites, art contributes to the game's feel, but it has to look passable.
Play metal slug. I can post some more if you want.

Attached: CourteousImperturbableGalapagoshawk-small.gif (480x420, 1.04M)

I love that pic

>ff7
>actual circles
lol

I prefer well-paced games with nicely-rendered, gestural artstyles. 2D or 3D is a secondary concern at best.

I’m just always OnTheGo™ so, I figure it will be the best way to play it as I won’t be able to sit down for long periods. Any tips?

Please post more

Cross your eyes to replicate the CRT blur effect and it'll look like how you remember in your childhood

Pixel done right is the absolute god-tier aesthetic.

The potential of low poly doesn't seem to have been tapped into quite as effectively as pixel, but I've definitely seem some eye poppingly beautiful shit posted by anons before. I think, with enough talent and passion, it's possible to make low poly look as good as high end pixel art.

definitely post more, my man

>indie pixeltrash has retroactively ruined a lot of 16bit by association
I hate to say it but the amount of indie garbage in the last 10 years has fucked my perception of pixel art, I just look at most 2D pixel games with disgust now.

Ygot it.
Agreed.
Plus I think low poly always has a good feel for horror.
SH1, LSDDE, probably some others I'm not thinking of.
Clock Tower 1 (2) was solid.

it's too bad nobody asked about that, you absolute fucking mental midget!

Attached: 1562166177394.gif (512x512, 716K)

this is the problem, pixel art is obviously better but it keeps getting used by retards making shit games so it's getting tarred by association.

Attached: 4175.gif (258x163, 49K)

if by pixel art you mean the stereotypical indie style (1px wide limbs) or the NES the copycat style, i prefer low poly

otherwise pixel art

Attached: 1561083430986.gif (1920x1080, 1.82M)

ah yeah, that's the stuff

>sharp edged pixels or filters

>combines both
>looks absolutely fucking amazing

Jesus Christ, Capcom has had some genius designers throughout the years.

Generally I believe
>Any style can look good if done well
>Art direction is always important

Oh yeah Devil Daggers is kinda that low poly style I love, add that to the pile.

Attached: tumblr_n8jy85sSL21qabnxjo9_400.gif (304x222, 971K)

>the fuck is wrong with the materia in that webm? emulated with too strong texture filtering? it's meant to be a circle

Looks like emulated based on the PS, which has texture warping and other issues since it's not proper full 3D. PGXP fixes this.

Attached: Assy_Nero_MSA_idle.gif (266x237, 92K)

You're right, I should have offered no critical thought whatsoever and just spouted a completely fucking arbitrary choice between two mediums based on little more than anecdotal experience.

Dumb fucking faggot, take your shitty little input and shove it up your ass.

I like both, but prefer low poly by a slim margin just because I think you can do so much more with it with far less work. But, my favorite two games of all time, Ys:Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin, are a hybrid of both pixel and low poly.

Attached: d5ne5w4-7def9990-5e11-4029-9cdd-81f54b8dc952.gif (210x158, 45K)

Breath of fire always looks so edible.

Attached: giphy.gif (157x125, 61K)

Depends on the game.

>You're right, I should have offered no critical thought whatsoever
yeah, that's pretty much what i was saying, because it wasn't relevant to the thread you fucking buffoon! You're coming into an already established conversation and interjecting your own stupid, unrelated, irrelevant thoughts!

Attached: 1562986712983.gif (170x180, 1.07M)

Can you two be nice

low poly always looks like shit. prove me wrong.
>you can't

Love both.

The hardest thing about pixel art is the time needed for it, I'm completely serious, shits like painting

Attached: slug-eleph-walk.gif (452x384, 411K)

You have your own opinions but this scene still fucking inspires me today.

Attached: file.png (1920x1080, 3.47M)

based. Silent Hill is pure kino

Attached: 1562799919176.jpg (639x480, 48K)

it being so low res/poly means your brain does a lot of the filling in, using imagination, and makes it spookier than all the modern 4k hd monster models in the world

They both have a certain charm. All depends on the execution.

In the case of Final Fantasy IV, I hated the 3D Chibis in the DS version and skipped it as a result. It was just a few months back when I bit the bullet and played the DS version and the only thing I liked was that the environments feel totally different because of the extra dimension.

I love the retro FF, Fire Emblem and NES, SNES and PS1 sprites. I do hate the low-effort "8-bit" indie style with a passion though.

I can't really explain how SH1 makes me feel but only LSD Dream Emulator has come close.
Agreed.
Plus everything just feels a bit more off? The animations of the enemies actually feel weird and janky.
Compared to a lot of modern horror where the enemies are either absurdly still or flail around like a goose on speed.

Attached: file.png (1440x900, 1.42M)

Also if you ever want to get into game design I'd suggest playing LSDDE
It's sort of one of those games when you play through it a few times you begin to get how it works.

Attached: file.png (1200x1200, 1.68M)

>indie games
>bad
They're better than AAA games.

Good pixel art age better than 3D

hmm.. as for me? i prefer pee pee poo poo :)

How can I become this comfy?

Attached: ratshower.webm (198x360, 2.76M)

>doesn't even use magic
>just chucks materia at Cloud
That's actually funny.

they're just as bad as aaa games. same tendency to recycle formulas, same cashgrabs (just in the form of kickstarter scams instead of microtransactions/lootboxes), same sjw political agendas.

My nigga

Low poly with cartoony/anime style textures.

Attached: FineLastGodwit-small.gif (409x378, 1.1M)

I'm surprised more devs don't try to expand upon this style. It must be extremely difficult to get right.

I'm a sucker for low poly but pixel is also great too

Low poly with pre-rendered backgrounds

Low poly. Pixel is rarely good unless done by those NEOGEO people who did metal slug. Everything else is overdone indie trash

Intradesting. I think maybe the lighting/textures on her clothes could use some work, but her face and the style of her outfit looks pretty nice.

>both versions have different sprites

Goddamn nigga, that's some fucking polish.

old school runescape got an update?

Great thread everyone, good job.

>low poly
That second picture isn't just low poly but low res too.
With today's technology you can make that look way better even while keeping the low poly count.

i'd take low poly over static sprites.

I like low poly

soul/soul

Attached: 1433320436166-2.gif (400x500, 804K)

Pixel, but fourth gen.

Attached: Untitled.png (848x632, 828K)

if both are good: low poly
if both are bad : pixel art

Good sprite work by far. Low poly can be okay, but not many people can actually make it work well.

FFIII DS art > FFIV sprites > FFIVDS art

comments like this make me sad as a solo game dev. it's not like i'm going to sit around and practice my art until it's good enough and THEN I start making games. No, I'm going to use what I know to make games that I would love to see made with possibly subpar graphics and learn on the side

I loved this game so much I'm working on making my own rpg based off it it, pre-rendered backdrops and everything.

Attached: ff7clone.jpg (847x476, 99K)

Truly a lost art form. I don't think I've seen prerendered backgrounds since the RE1 remake.

Attached: 1399779491721.gif (500x400, 3.67M)

Where my prerendered niggs at? best of both worlds in one

Attached: 10-FqWQy3I[1].png (640x479, 113K)

Or you could hire a competent artist to do it.

I hate indiegame pixel art. Some are obviously good, but most look like shit. It's those shitty 16x16 stick figure pixel shit that I'm talking about.

Looks really good. I miss old backgrounds like that.

Attached: 32-RLRH9nG[1].gif (320x240, 1.88M)

I Like it. Keep at it, user.

Valkyrie Profile was aesthetic as fuck.

welp seems I've found the style for my game

pixel ages better, low poly has more charm

They really do fit the style the best.
It's like cel shading before cel shading.

Attached: mint.jpg (500x375, 59K)

I have an idea for a giantess game and this is sort of the style I want for it.

Low-poly is cool.

Attached: D_n_vrOU0AAavmT.png (1280x720, 329K)

holy shit where is this from? legit looks cool

twitter.com/kyu_fu/

It's a Japanese indie game that's in the works.

Attached: D_hEJ5jU8AAuvrI.png (1280x720, 262K)

I'm playing through it for the first time, got to the glacier, and I'm honestly not really feeling it. All the dumb minigames suck, the combat isn't all that great, and I think I preferred mostly preset characters in 4 or 6 to the materia system where everyone can do everything and that's not interesting.

underrated comment by a very smart (and correct) user

thanks user, do we know anything about the gameplay yet?

That looks rad user, hope you'll post more when you have it

Low poly

FFIV PSP Complete Collection is the best version of FFIV

pixel is fine when its not modern pixel art, but low poly is the best of the two to me (as long as the resolutions decent)

I love both a lot, couldn’t pick. Honestly would love a game that utilizes both.

this looks really sick

Both are highly soulful

Is there any 3d modeling software that lets me model by subdividing cubes or am I retarded?

If I recall correctly, Bravely Default used them, which looked quite nice.

Well animated low poly is great so long as you are at 1080p

suddenly reminded me of a new zero but this look much better

post gameplay vid

I like you.

Low poly can look fantastic but few are good at it. Pixel art is easier and people are still often shit at it.
I prefer low poly though, probably just due to scarcity and personal bias of being a lowpoly modeler.

I'm still a bit upset we never got a 3D remake of V like III and IV got.

>pixel art is easier

imagine unironically believing this

Nearly all of them.

Both can be good. I'm more a fan of pixelart but that's probably due to nostalgia. There are less people who dedicate themselves to good low poly art so it's harder to find good examples of it being done, while there are lots of people who work at making good pixel art.

Attached: Legend of Mana.gif (640x448, 503K)

That is not combining both, that is pixel art. Get glasses, you blind fool.

My First RPG was Neverwinter. So i jsut can stand pixel. Than i played The legend of Dragoon and i fell in love with low poly. I hate how most of "nostalgia"-based rpgs this days are pixel. I cant play them. Im 21 ye so maybe im just an noob.

Fair enough - depends on if you're animating it, and at what fps, and the size of the image, etc.
But it's easier to make a 16x32 character look good in a single frame. Than a 200 poly character with a 128x128 texture.
The best of pixel art is more difficult than the best of lowpoly, talent wise, but it's harder to create something passable in lowpoly than in pixel art.
Things like metal slug are insanely rare for a reason.

>hasn't ever played BoF IV
Research before replying, you retarded fool
The game blends low poly with pixel art and it works so damn well

Look again, the background is real time 3D you dick face.

Xenogears did that really well imo. It didn't blend super well, but the character rotations and such felt comfy somehow.

>pixels
>kana is only

Comfy combination of game
The feeling is like when I was young again. Nostalgia!

Attached: o0320028813879916795.png (320x288, 2K)

Just looked it up on Play, people say it crashes a lot but that might just be their devices.
I almost bought it but then I looked through screenshots and noticed the "ENCOUNTERS: ON" button.

The fuck?

...Did everyone make Faris a blue mage first?
Because I did that too

based japanon

16bit sprites > vomit > cancer > Atari-looking indie sprites > FFIII-abomination 3D

Play it using a PSP or Vita then.

Both at the same time?

The reason why MML1/2/Tron Bonne looked so good was partially because the facial expressions were drawn for every specific scene depending on the angles/lighting of the scene. That would be very time consuming compared to just slapping in some smooth looking lower poly models with some global lighting that overall looks acceptable, even if it isn't exceptional.

Attached: 1509485620128.gif (540x375, 169K)

where's that from?

Legend of Mana is legitimately one of the most beautiful games ever made to me. The visual style and the music just really click.

That said Vagrant Story is without a doubt the most goddamn aesthetic low poly game out there. It's a great example of how to make the best of your hardware visually.

Attached: 1447762679651.gif (300x200, 1.81M)

I have a soft spot for low poly but it's really fucking difficult nowadays to get it right. It used to be some of the best developers pushing their tech as far as they could, nowadays you have to purposely gimp yourself to achieve it and few manage to get that balance.

Attached: 1546631447038.gif (640x479, 764K)

Pixel. Going from pixel to low poly was tough.

Depends, there is good and bad examples for both, but i would say Pixel edges out for me personally, but im also the type that personally think SMB3 (NES) is the best looking version of SMB3.

Both have extremely high potential when executed correctly.

That said, I believe pixel art is massively oversaturated in the indie market and we're due a "nostalgia boom" of low-poly games for those now entering their thirties.

Don't let these threads get you down.
Most who post in them don't ever play indie games honestly, it's mostly nostalgia for the AAA of yesteryear.
Just make game.

It is

lmao. Looking again, I just realised they're boss sprites. nice touch

My very first run, Butz was my Blue Mage, Lenna was a Knight, Galuf was a Monk and Faris was a Black Mage.
I love FF5

I like a combination, like Xenogears and the DS Dragon Quest remakes

Yes.

Pixel-drawn characters in a low poly 3d world like Breath of Fire IV.

If the game is lacking polygons it absolutely needs to be gaining something somewhere else. Particles, FPS, view distance, objects. Unless the artstyle is fucking hella crisp, but 99/100 low poly games exist that way because the devs can only produce shite.

Attached: SMB.gif (507x380, 42K)

Low poly

Attached: schala.jpg (640x480, 62K)

it's not that simple. It's less about the amount of pixels and polygons and more about the style

Little Samson still blows me the fuck away

Looks comparable to Shovel Knight.

Most of the time? Pixel art.
In your example? Low poly.
The FF DS games were kino.
