The only robot that fits your "rushed and poorly designed" description would be the Mr. Handy series of robots. Protectrons and sentry bots are more than reliable and capable of doing the jobs they are tasked with. The only robots specifically given "personalities" upon their creation were the handy-types. Its why Mr. Gutsy spouts propaganda as he speaks, and why household butlerbots act like english gentlemen. Skynet and a few other bots are some of the only to have developed sentience, and they are the exception.

There are definitely examples of them going haywire, like the metro ticket bots in FO3, but I cant really think of any other instances where they malfunctioned and turned hostile. it's because in order for a character to be "gay" they have to act "gay" in a way. If you make a character that just goes through the story and shows no attraction to anyone, for no other reason than that they didn't had more important priorities than getting laid at the time, then they aren't considered "gay". Therefore in order to make a character "gay" you have to make them show attraction to another character of the same gender, now here is where things get difficult but not really. If you make a game, it has a plot, and the characters are usually invested in that plot, most characters will ignore romance, some will have some romantic subplots and maybe the main character will have a romantic interest throughout the game. But then you throw a "gay" character into the mix. Remember the thing that makes a character gay is a romantic interest in another character, but the thing with a "gay" character is that due to this romance being essential, it becomes extremely glaring and this romance becomes huge, leading to "gay" characters coming of as gay first and a character second, not to mention that how the whole "gay" character plot intrudes on the rest of the game and breaks the flow of it as there aren't any real big romances except for this one faggot who gets so much attention for no reason other than he's gay.

I 100% agree, its mostly down to the actual depth of the character, when someone writes a shallow character it usually is just some flamboyant faggot or super assertive lesbian, but when you take a character like arcade its much easier to make it not forced as fuck.
