I mean IT IS a throwback 90s shooter. They tried to recreate that 90s Build engine games feeling as much as possible, yet are backing out on the protagonist's design? She needs to be as 90s gaudi as it gets. Duke, Caleb and Lo-Wang were all overdrawn caricatures, which made them so memorable in the first place.

I don't dislike Shelly's current design, on the contrary, I think she has a cute face. Yet it feels like she does not belong in that particular era, like Marty McFry in Back To The Future. Her character design belongs in this current timeline.
I don't know whoever decided on her current look, yet I think he or she did it out of conviction. But sadly for all the wrong reasons considering the type of game they are trying to make.
After playing the preview campaign I'm sure all her recorded lines could easily work with Design A. They wouldn't even have to completely rewrite/redraw her. Heck, they could even keep her current face, hair and eye color. Just switch up the body part with Design A. As for the story part; two lines of rewrite would do the trick. Simply make her an ex-EDF soldier/explosives expert. The world lies in shambles and the EDF forces are scattered all over anyway.

Character design is a tricky tightrope walk. It can make or break a figure and make it either iconic and for the ages or forgettable.
