I've beaten 1,2,3,4,8, and 11 so far. Waiting for my copy of 5 to show up then I'm gonna start that. I'm currently playing Builders 2

played 1 4 5 6 7 8 9 and im on 11 now. i got stuck on the boss in the mural with draconian mode, 3 attacks a turn with huge damage full party attacks + status effects is not fun
Is draconian mode fun? I've played through 11 normally on PS4 and I'm going to get it again for switch because I loved it but if I can change it up a bit then I'd like to. I don't want to make the game so difficult I can't enjoy it though either.
They are endless grindfests at a comp level the strategy is all done before the battle starts, once its ongoing there is not much you can do, you hit "go" and see it go
So its more like a cockfighting simulator where you raise your cock heh and then see how it performs out there more than a strategic rpg like pokemon

I've played XI and I loved it. I want to play DQVIII on the 3ds but it's pretty expensive for an old 3ds game. I can't into homebrewing my 3ds, I tried for hours but I couldn't do it.
i found normal mode too easy so i started over at the scorpion boss, it's definitely more satisfying for me and i haven't needed to grind at all, the worst thing about it is that even random encounters can kill you constantly in the early game before you get all your party members
Copies of 8 are like 40 bucks that's not that bad? Try out GameStop's website and buy a used copy for cheap?

I think I also beat V, and I but it’s been so long I don’t remember. I wanted to pick up XI and builders 2
plan out what skills you wanna get with your characters, you can usually only max 1 or 2 skill trees by the endgame depending on the character

People still praise Chrono Trigger to this, the same thing could have happened to Dragon Quest, especially V
When you unlock the casino (way farther in the game) exploit the fuck out of the autosave on the roulette wheel to get a fuck ton of tokens to buy the 2nd best armor set in the game and the best whip in the game if you have someone using the whip. Gringham whip is great for big numbers on all enemies at once. You can find easy videos about how to exploit and win big money on YouTube. Just keep it in mind.

Oh yeah, and if you have a bunch of tokens left over and want to make yourself rich with actual money, buy a bunch if prayer rings with your tokens and sell the rings to a vendor to make bank.

V is solid, monster collecting is so fun and it probably has my favorite story of all the dragon quests. they're making a movie for it too, looks pretty sweet
Best versions of V to play are unironically mobile or for the DS. Mobile is cheaper if you dont mind touch controls. I played 1-4 on my phone and had no problems and enjoyed it even. DS is fine too but unless you emulate get ready to spend like 50-60 bucks on an original DS game

The only jrpg I have ever finished is mother 1, is DQ1 any good? NES or SNES?
Also the DS version has the most amount of monsters you can recruit. I think mobile has the same amount as the DS version but I could be wrong

My personal recommendation for people who want to start dragon quest:
>Play 1, 2(it's the black sheep of the series, very rough around the edges but still enjoyable and worth your time), 3, and 4 on mobile or get an emulator. Whatever you do, make sure you play a version of 4 that has the party chat, it's super important to giving one if the best parties in dragon quest their personalities. They removed it in the DS version for whatever reason
>Do not play 7 for your first game, it's the longest one and has a high chance of killing your interest. It's not a bad game from what I've heard, but it's basically dragon quest for people who have played a bunch if dragon quest and just want more
>8, 9, and 11 can be played whenever, they're very standalone with some references to previous games here and there but nothing huge
>Try to play 4,5, and 6 in order since they're technically a Trilogy like 1,2, and 3 are.
Currently going througj V for the first time. I must be nearing the end by now. For the past two years I've been causally playing the series in order. I swear Dragon Quest has ruined other JRPGs for me.

yeah that happens when you realize they are all failed DQ clones, eventually I came around to liking most of them again for what they are including FF which I despised for a while
It's not that their failed DQ clones. It's just that I prefer the freedom you get with DQ games. I feel a lot of others focus too much on story.

I like how simple DQ is. I just really unironically like the fantasy setting and turn based combat with the charming characters and comfy character and monster designs. Personally I love toriyamas art and even though he's got issues with just reusing hair and facial features and just mixing and matching them basically, DQ wouldn't be itself without his unique style

Yeah you nailed it for me. The bright and colourful environments. The focus on classic fantasy tropes have went from cliche to comfortable. The side quests formula of each town you come across having their own issue that needs sorted.
Plus its fun to see how they subverted and improved (play as NPCs, play as the son of famous hero, playing through a whole life). It's brilliant shit.
Its on my to do list. I might give it a go after 8.
I wish the UI in the mobile ports of 4-6 looked a bit nicer. Like pixel art to match the games aesthetics at least.
3DS version which streamlines the long intro of the PS1 version
I also like how dark the games can get sometimes despite them coming off as goofy and cartoony
Children get straight up murdered in 11, your village and childhood friend get slaughtered trying to protect you[spoiler/] in 4, etc.
How is Builders 2?
Because i'm running through them in order I know very little about 11. How does it hold up to the classics?
As someone who can't really focus on town builder/farming games I'd say really good. But I'm probably not the best judge here since it's not my genre.
Really great. Up there with the fan favorite DQs like 3, 4, 5, and 8.
It's fantastic in my opinion. Made me fall in love with DQ. Only gripe I'd say I have with it is the soundtrack and the post game. It's still a solid 9/10 to me though
If you have a switch just wait for that to come out instead of playing it on PC or PS4. You'll get way more plus a far better soundtrack
That's exciting. I'll probably go switch to play it because RPGs are more comfy in handheld with some bs playing on the TV.
I still think 3 might be my oersonal favourite. Following in your fathers footsteps just really resonated with me.
