the only thing about DMC1 that's outdated is the yellow orb system
and even that could be fixed by just adding a 'Retry mission' button to the death screen instead of forcing players to either restart ps2 or use an orb then go back to main menu and reload save

DMC1 is only outdated in terms of its combat rigidity compared to basically every game it inspired; it holds up in terms of level design, enemy design, and boss design better than the majority of the games it inspired.
5 is my favorite DMC but disregarding 1, its importance, and its qualities that keep it worth playing today is the mark of a pleb.

1 still feels more satisfying to play sometimes because it actually feels like you can dish out heavy damage. Dante got even flashier in the later games but sometimes it also feels like he's weaker so you have more time with each enemy to show off, which I don't always like as much.
