Considering their wallets and intent on hostile takeover of a significant part of the market? A cheap publicity stunt. Good for blender tho.

-olving the PC gaming scene by conjuring up pointless platform wars resulting in a fragmented and weary population of gamers who will see the light and take the GOGpill, leaving behind restrictive and authoritative DRM platforms and unifying PC gamers under the one ideal distinguishing PC from consoles: freedom

Fuck all paid shills.

Holy shit bros epic is based!!!! I love winnie the pooh now!!!

They can do two different things. I think this was a nice gesture but it does not distract from the issue that they need to improve their own store and lay off trying to create a walled garden in a pro-consumer environment. Thankfully if you look into the mega grant, it does not imply any aggressive takeover of Blender. Blender will benefit off this immensely.

its a play on epic megagames

$1.2 million is jack shit. This means nothing.

Steamdrones are pathetic

Yes they are evil.
But autodesk is a MUCH bigger evil, that buys and kills every 3D tool they can and push the whole gaming and movie industry back.
So you can bet your bottom dollar that even EA help blender secretly, in hope it will kill autodesk.

Very nice. Timmy Tencent definitely has his moments. I agree with his opinion that 30% take is too much for steam but he is going about it the exact wrong way. I will never purchase or even install that chinese botnet. fuck epic and fuck jews.

They are literally and aggressively trying to create a monopoly, this is hilarious.

I don't give a shit, when is 2.8 gonna be ready for production use?

The Blender Institute (or Foundation, can never remember which is which) typically gets by on thirty to fifty grand every several months. One point two million is huge.

I find it funny that people at Epic think throwing money at things will suddenly make people like them.

Are steamtards literally brain-dead ? That's the budget of Witcher 1.

If they threw money at me I'd like them.

they took away our games...

I doubt that is the reason why. A lot of companies do this. It's probably a tax thing.

But what’s in it for you?

Why would someone pretend to like something they have no genuine opinion of if they aren’t being compensated? That’s the only point of shilling, after all. If you aren’t getting something in return then you have no reason to argue for it besides actually thinking highly of it.

>Shitty baking, shitty viewport performance, shitty UV workflow, just to name a few
Ahahahaha what fucking year do you think it is? That might have been true 5 years ago but it's certainly not the case anymore.

Blender absolutely shits all over 3DS Max, Maya and Modo in each and every of those respects these days, i've been using Maya professionally for the better part of a decade and everyone I know including myself is well and truly fucking sick of Autodesks broken bullshit that hasn't improved in a fucking decade and endless price gouging. Blender is absolutely fucking destroying the competition at the moment.

Honestly, I don't think autodesk would give a fuck about suing you if you were indie enough, if your game was super popular then you should pay. If your indie game gets super popular just get sued and tell the judge you were very poor, couldn't pay, and didn't expect your sales to be so good, you'll get sued a heavy chunk but won't go to prison.

Can't actually believe what I'm reading, they would obviously jump on your dick like hungry piranhas.
Any dev actually being okay with getting gouged in court is probably insane.

>saving games AND 3D porn
Holy shit, is there anything Tim "based" Sweeny can't do?

>can't make shota 3d porn anymore without getting sued by tencent

great

based

You might be sick of Autodesks broken bullshit but it doesn't magically fix Blender

Blender is open source, so unless your country has a law against shota you can keep making them however you like.

>So if I were to pirate autodesk there'd be no telltale signs I used it in case of an audit or something?
There are markers.

And forget "audit" they'll audit you digitally and remotely and fuck your shit up if they catch you, i've worked for more than half a dozen studios of varying sizes that have received unpleasant letters from Autodesk over the years for using pirated shit.

If you want to use pirated Autodesk products, do it offline, then export them to an obj, import them into blender, export them again into whatever format you want etc then as soon as you start making money ditch all copies of Autodesk shit.

I think I will just not worry about it and learn blender at this point.

Is rigging a mesh and making the joints bend properly easier in autodesk? I'm learning blender right now and I've got a grasp on modelling, but I don't understand shit about rigging without everything going to hell. Does autodesk have features to make this easier or is it really just a matter of good topology?

Does Epic even run a profit? Nobody is using it.

It's not about liking them, it's just them slowly forcing control over the entire industry.

Maya is much better for animation and rigging, generally

They're Tencent's puppet company

Attached: 1539041085581.jpg (3260x2416, 1.26M)

If you're just starting out with 3D then absolutely go with Blender, it's the way the whole industry is headed because the pros far outweigh the cons and Blenders development is rocketing along. Grab UVlayout, learn to love it, grab 3DCoat if you want to do hand painted stuff, Zbrush for sculpting, Houdini for dynamics/procedural shit, Substance for texturing and go nuts.

Valve cucks are gonna love them!

It's a matter of good topology for deformation, skin weighting and decent bone placement. There's a reason as to why riggers/animators earn the most of any "art" related professions in CG, shit can be an absolute nightmare.

Didn't Epic try playing the humanitarian by challenging Valve to match their sales distribution? And then later that week, it came out that Epic employees were working 100-hour weeks?

I like EA. They brought DeadSpace to gog and other good games. That's pretty rad!

Attached: 1563198560587.gif (400x400, 666K)

Anyone making anything of worth is working 100 hour weeks.

Ask Valve.

The place Maya still has a good foothold in is rigging/animating. Blender hasn't really worked on the animation part of its package in years. Once it does though Maya is fucked. No company is going to pay $699+tip a year per Autodesk license when Blender can do that shit for free, and for paid options ZBrush has been a way cheaper (one time purchase) package for 3d sculpting/modeling for at least the past two years.

So Blender's been compromised huh.

>Open tools, libraries and platforms are critical to the future of the digital content ecosystem
>says the guy who runs a closed source chinese botnet that actively tries to reduce the number of platforms new projects are available on.
maybe when he starts practicing what he preaches people will stop hating them.

fpbp

I just found the hypocrisy hilarious. As progressive as Epic makes itself out to be, that brief lapse in their narrative was perfectly timed.

Nah they're still going to pay because you have boomer 3D artists who couldn't be bothered to step over from their antiquated program if it killed them.
Fucking Pascal as a programming language lived way beyond its point of obsolescence and it's going to be the same thing for autodesk.

I'm not too sure about that, because the 3d field, unlike most other fields, is way more about adapting or dying than anything else. There's no such thing as being stubborn and sticking to a software you know because the industry is too new and always changing. Nobody is out there using Maya 2009 for example. Every professional I've talked to has always told me not to get too attached to Maya, or Houdini or anything because tomorrow some new, better program could be released and suddenly that's your industry standard.

It's more apparent in less competitive markets, which I guess you don't have.

>epic pays the blender foundation 1.2m
>blender foundation announces that it will drop linux support

It might also be that programs for 3d work are generally all the same, when you look at the core functions. You figure out how to model a person in Maya by moving vertices you can do it anywhere else really, it's just all the extra tools that are different. The most difficult thing is adapting to the different shortcut keys. So it's to your benefit to learn a bunch of different programs. Whereas with programming I assume it's totally different to do the same kind of thing in each one and a lot of the knowledge doesn't carry over.

>because the 3d field, unlike most other fields, is way more about adapting or dying than anything else. There's no such thing as being stubborn and sticking to a software you know because the industry is too new and always changing.

Absolute nonsense, I work for one of the premier CG studios on the planet and everyone is still running antiquated shit. My work machine has Maya 2012/2015, outdated versions of Zbrush, Mari, Photoshop CS5 etc

Simply put change is fucking expensive and extremely risky, writing new custom tools is expensive, creating new asset pipelines is expensive, and the cost of shifting a 250 million dollar production onto software that is an unknown quantity that could potentially result in tools down for even a few weeks costs millions. At the top end the industry is incredibly slow to change.

>Nobody is out there using Maya 2009 for example.
I can name 4 big studios still using it and a metric fuck ton still using 2012 as well for the reasons mentioned above, not to mention you can find bulk licenses for them a lot fucking cheaper.

Fyi i'm not saying you should skill up on old, antiquated shit, but it's still very much in use and the backbone of the industry at the moment.

It's always been about pushing unreal engine, not EGS

Bet no one at epic uses blender

Well no not really. It's pretty much the same thing. Programming doesn't get more complicated unless you're doing hardware programming. There is no difference in difficulty between most languages, it's all the same concepts give or take a feature here and there.

From my point of view Autodesk are evil.

Attached: Tifa3.png (1230x1664, 1.57M)

Really? I thought Maya drops support for versions that are 3 years old. As in, those old license keys shouldn't work. Or is it all being done under the table with the hope that Autodesk doesn't come a knockin'? Maya's anti-piracy measures ARE notoriously weak, so I can see that happening.

The way you tell a program to do something is the same across all languages though? Like for example in 3d programs the only difference when it comes to vertex modeling is which button you press to let you start manipulating the vertices. If you want to write a program to move a box on the screen, it's the same no matter which language you use, just using a different word for "move" or "box"?

>support
kek no one relies on Autodesk for support, everyone is running such extensive custom plugins that their tools are more in house than Autodesk at this point anyway.

And they stopped selling older products, they stopped supporting them, but much to their dismay there's no legal way they can force people to stop using them and everyone runs shit offline anyway because relying on Autodesk's key verification servers that will regularly go down for a full day is a great way to tank a production.

Yes, the hardware basics don't change so the concepts don't change. I guess it would be a bit more abstract in the way the differences show with Java vs compiled languages, or scripting, but essentially no matter the language you're doing the same thing. Some are more comfortable than others, but that's about it.
You're going to have differences in languages and how the compiler deals with things like syntax, but learning the basics of a new language isn't going to take more than two weeks. It's like learning a dialect of a language you already know.

>tfw you can see part of her areola sticking out.

I use Blender to sculpt D&D monsters/characters and then 3D print them :)

Subpar performance. A professional uses maya because it crashes a minimum of 3 times a day, giving you bonus 30 minutes of break time. A hobbyist uses blender because they want to get shit done.

Why are Epicucks so worried about developers money? That shit doesn't trickle down you retards. The ends result is another mediocre game with more DLC and MIcrotransactions. Again, I don't give a fuck about code monkeys, I'll buy their game if it's not dog shit, but I'm not going to pretend I care about their well being. Fuck em.

I preordered Witcher 3 for like $9 that way, but I haven't tried since

Literally buying influence and power before everyone's eyes.

>I bet valve also helps blender.

Valve is a silver level sponsor via Steam workshop and contributes funding periodically based on workshop sales, iirc.
They also have a few developers working half-time on various parts of Blender.

Epic is now listed as Blender's top contributing 'patron' for the act of the one-time lump-sum of 1 million dollars, which is absolute horse-shit and probably part of whatever deal Sweeney-Toad struck to get them that grant.

>Didn't Epic try playing the humanitarian by challenging Valve to match their sales distribution?

Gaben's only appropriate answer to that would have been: "Sure Tim, once you match our feature set."

Actually the appropriate answer is not answering at all. Epic desperately wants Valve to acknowledge them because that makes their claim of being the "main competitor" to Steam's monopoly true.

another reason to use maya instead

He's laying the groundwork for paid mods

Isn't Blender's FBX support (which is the industry standard model exchange format and is used in UE and Unity) still kinda fucky? Why would anyone use Blender as a game-engine asset pipeline?

You can't be serious right? Blender is 3D software for babies. Never heard of a studio using it

You just get the full versions of all their stuff updated whenever with no limitations for just saying you are a student, not even providing anything. Pirating at this point is like using blender, making things harder and shittier for no reason.

It's because after data mining their users 99% who used UE were also using blender.
t unityfag who uninstalled that oiece of shit UE and their spyware.

Having a history working with Epic, I'd say they are pretty great. They are of course a company, and with that comes company tactics etc. But Tim used to mow lawns to fund his game development, he came from nothing, and did not forget that. He respects others who do the same a lot, and clearly is trying to make it easy for others to follow a similar path to success, while at the same time fund his fondness for fast cars, I have no quarrel with that at all personally.
