Both of those games were more for the story than anything else. And in Alan Wake's case, it was intended to be more like what they're going for with Control, but got butchered before release.

I know it's easy, but you're still going to be at low health constantly even if you have maxed out running, dashing, and bombs. Hard doesn't let you do it 24/7, there is constant downtime in most fights, especially later on when everyone ignores your powers.

Yeah, not seeing any real similarities beyond ragdolling things. Telekinesis basically allows Jesse to yank anything from the environment for use as a weapon, or shield herself in a protective barrier of rubble she can throw at people when she's done with it. From what we've seen so far, her powers have tons of appliactions the gun in HL does not.

I remember this game. It looks like its more presentation then actual gameplay. In fact the trailers for it go out of their way to show off physics; I recall a scene where the player casually hits a bookcase and stands there as things fall off of it.
Now obviously the team looked pretty competent at what they were trying to do, but I don't think I need to play a tech demo in physics.
Is there any footage you can share that looks fun (or at least challenging)? Understand they don't even display a health meter or power meter so I'm lead to believe its one of those games you automatically recover health quickly and are able to simply spam the flashy special moves to instantly win encounters.

Basically I want you to understand I have a rational opinion that the game looks like shit but could be good.

You don't recover health automatically. You need to fight and kill enemies to recover lost health, and there's a meter to determine how long you can sustain abilities. The OP video shows it pretty clearly.

So, Ravenholm. Remember when the WCmappack was leaked and we all got to play it? That was pretty cool for 2003. The hunter physics kills in Episode 2 (2008) was cool too. But this just makes me want Episode 3, and not a half-baked imitation that lacks any of the things that made HL2 cool.

No they haven't because the Havok physics system costs a fuckton to license, most of the games that do tend to be free HL2 mods for this reason. I don't know how old you are, but having actual physics in a game is generally not a thing companies want to do against a generic shooter, which is what Control ultimately is. It's obvious the physics were tacked on at the end of development, since half the objects in the room are static (a clear downgrade from HL2) and the NPCs don't react to thrown objects like those in Bioshock do.

No amount of shine, fancy graphics or effects can change this because TPSes have done that before. See Mindjack above, which also caked on VFX to hide it's generic hallways and open spaces.

I'm all up for a new physics combat game, but every kill in Control's trailer was with guns and not physics objects. And of the gun kills, all of them were the same as any other TPS. NPCs are faceless security guards that don't say anything, and everything is static. Even when a gernade or bomb goes off, nothing moves or breaks. Even Max Payne 1 had more to do since it was really easy to die and you couldn't just wade into gunfire, you had to jump around to survive.

Bullshit, see all the stuff in regards to Cohen's apartment and the secret area in Arcadia. Both required keys in later levels to access and gave out special plasmids. Even Bioshock 2 had a bit of this, despite it's non-linearity. Bioshock 2 was also a better game than Control is, since NPCs would try and gang up on you instead of just standing around like potatoes.

I replayed the MP games recently, and it was kind of a bore. I was incredibly impressed at the time for how good the controls, the slomo feature, the storytelling, the visuals, almost everything was, but now, it's just shooting boring dudes over and over again. In hindsight, shooters with varied enemies like Blood, Doom, and Half-Life have aged better than games like Max Payne, no matter how revolutionary it was at the time.

This game looks a bit strange to me. They clearly put a lot of focus into the presentation during gameplay. Maybe too much, it's like a RTX sponsored game showing off all this intricate lighting work, shadows, and physics unnecessarily affecting dozens of individual pieces of debris.
At the same time, it has that Mass Effect style presentation when two characters are talking, complete with awkward facial animations, constantly swaying their bodies from one side to the other as an attempt to make the characters resemble human behavior, but end up falling for the uncanny valley feel.
The protag is extremely bland. It's like they gambled everything into just making her female and expect to get people's attention that way. This is especially puzzling to me because there are areas where the game doesn't look at all realistic, so they could have taken more liberties to at least design an unique outfit. That woman mechanic stands out more than the main character.

I don't have much to say about gameplay. Okay, I guess? It seems like it has your typical TPS controls, except you can float in the air and use Telekenisis to throw random shit at enemies. I think I'd rather play Bioshock. Overall, I give it a slightshrug/10. I'm just not impressed by anything they've showed so far.

After seeing Ahti, I'm thinking the entire effect is intentional. Though strictly speaking, Laan Wake had a similar effect. You just couldn't see it all that often.

When is this getting released?
I saw some gameplay a few months ago and clearly remember thinking "Oh, this UI is garbage and clearly must be a place holder while they design the real thing" and he we are with the same shit, and I'm assuming the reason they're revealing so much is because they're close to release.

I've heard them talk about the building and atmosphere and that seems to be almost all they've worked on. The main character looks dull as fuck, the cut scene animations don't look finished. There's almost no animation in it it's too models standing there wobbling back and forth while their lips, JUST THEIR LIPS move. Remedy gets caught up in a cool idea and forget/ignores everything that makes a game interesting or engaging. Even though I usually think it's bullshit when they say this, if you said this was pre alpha footage and the game isn't coming out til late next year I'd say this looks promising. I hope they work on the designs and animation between now and then, but I know or am pretty sure it's not. And this is pretty much the finished project.

This is actually not just a Remedy problem and more of an overall issue with most AA and AAA companies doing narrative focused games. See when these companies began and made their debuts there weren't as many narrative heavy games at the time that imitated movies the way these games did so they were really novel and fresh. GTA, Max Payne, Wing Commander, etc. Now Remedy devs have said they always wanted to make narrative heavy games and as tech improves it allows devs everywhere to make games that are more cinematic and closer and closer to movies, removing player agency, etc. It's a slippery slope that leads to stuff like Quantum Break. It really isn't just Remedy. It's an industy wide problem of devs losing sight that what they're making first and foremost are video games.

Max Payne: Leap into room, ITS PAYNE, shoot badguys in slow motion, mop up in real time if needed and slip behind cover, repeat as needed.

Alan Wake: Slink around to find enemies, avoid attacks and hit them with light, finish them off with your weapons; use environmental light to your advantage.

I didn't play Quantum Break, but time powers probably make some kind of gameplay loop as well, so whatever.

All the footage I've seen of Control hasn't had a single scripted bit of player character animation like you'd see in a Naughty Dog game. The player seems to be in control at all times outside of dialogue. So I don't understand what you mean.

Monologue chatter is really one of the worst trends in modern gaming. Did anyone notice how she repeats the same lines after retrying a checkpoint? I think it was against that plant boss or something. So annoying.
Was it Uncharted that popularized these moments where the character absolutely needs to react with some snarky comment, or the constant "wh-whoooaaaaa!" exclamations and other white noise, otherwise the player feels "disconnected" and there's not enough immurjun or some bullshit? God, each time I think about AAA western development I get increasingly pissed off. Control has that scent of high budget and mass appeal all over it.

How's it interesting? It's literally just another form of doing direct damage, it could be a magic missile that appearead from thin air instead and it would feel the same.

It could be fun if they allow you to pick up literal masses of objects on screen to fuck with. Or pick up a gun on the ground to shoot with it telepathically. Maybe late game you even have powers to fully control bullets shot at you or bullets that you shoot.

Because your resources for using it are based on the environment. Positioning is important beyond sight lines and now random set dressing like monitors and vending machines are suddenly important tactical resources.
