Tolkien is the baseline for what we consider generic fantasy (Medieval/early renaissance era, set up in a place analogous to Europe, with British and Nordic mythological leanings), and he set up a precedent of elves as a humanlike race with magical leanings, a long life and above average competence compared to humans as a result.
What people miss is that Tolkien also gave his elves a boatload of flaws they had to overcome, so what you get left with is a bunch of aloof superior beings who are objectively better than everyone else and know it.
Particularly bad authors actually take the flaws Tolkien gave them as GOOD things, so what you get left with is a bunch of aloof physically superior assholes that the author wants you to believe are absolutely great despite causing or enabling the shit state of the setting.
The worst authors not only give them flaws that they think of as good, but also try actively removing any flaws possible, while inadvertently making them even worse.

So what you get left with is an aloof, physically and magically objectively superior being, who is an absolute asshole, who the setting wants you to believe is the second coming, who caused half the fuck ups in the setting but doesn't take any responsibility.
Now imagine you're playing a pen and paper RPG, and some absolute faggot wants to play one of these fuckers.

Each fantasy race has their flaws, and for elves, it's usually being snobby pricks. It's hard to like stuffy self-righteous people over.
