Mostly separate stories but some games are connected, usually just loosely though. 3, 5, and 8 are all good choices to start. SNES version of 3 is best, DS/mobile version of 5 is best, and 3DS version of 8 is best.

3, 5, 8, and 11 are commonly given entry points.
Most of the games are disconnected, but it's neat if you play 1-3 in order. Just playing 3 is fine too. The Super Famicom versions of these are the best, and there's English patched ROMs out there. The GBC ports are also good.
