Right here. There are some games I play that actually preform better docked so the life isn't even on my radar. I might pick up the Pokemon S&S one just to resell but that would be it.

It is only better if you are only going to get the 4 good Nintendo games on they system.
Get the original switch if you are going to have other games but if you have a pc and/or a ps4 you only want a couple of games anyways.

How is the regular Switch inferior?
I think both stand on the same ground. The regular is for people who like the hybrid aspect of the console and those who want to play the Switch mainly on the big screen. The Lite is for those who don't want to play on the big screen, but otherwise is the same console. (Although net play might be even worse if they haven't improved the wifi chip)
As for the D-pad, you can easily buy 3rd party Joy Cons with one or buy a Joy Con casing with a D-pad and modify your own and the pro controller or other 3rd party controllers are always an option.
The pros/cons of either version depends on what you want from your Switch.
The Switch Lite is still not out yet, so we don't know if Nintendo fixed the drift issue or not or if it has overheating issues or not. If both problems exist, then objectively the Lite is inferior.

90% docked, 10% portable (bring it to work for multiplayer sometimes). I’ve always just preferred a console experience.

I think it absolutely should habe the option of buying a Switch Lite Dock and controller separately later if you want, but even so there are players who want literally none of the fluff, and just want a pure handheld experience with the fidelity of the Switch

This is why they put out a smaller, more portable version of the Switch with fewer features, because most people in Japan don't care about the docked aspect of it. The experience is definitely worse to a degree. I’d at least detach the joy con and use the grip, but you can’t do that with Lite
