They were never broken though, it was the joycons that were poorly made. Although some people do dislike the dpad.

No if you're talking about the D-pad. The grip feels like shit anyway. You're not missing out. It's pretty uncomfortable.

Not really. I use the Wii U pro controller, personally, but that thing went out of production ages ago and doubled in price.

One of the 8 Bitdo ones with the joysticks. You will want joysticks since some modern 2D games still need them for some things.
They have really good d-pads, I've compared it to my SNES one and if anything it's better because it hasn't been through decades of wear on the rubber.

I'll never understand the following behind this controller. The buttons feel wonky and sharp, the D-pad is complete trash, and the grip has virtually no curvature.

I can't speak for the other current gen consoles but I do own this piece of crap and let me tell you, it is not ergonomic at all.

The dpad is trash and it’s a MAJOR flaw on a 70 dollar controller. The joy con are fine between updating them, calibrating them, cleaning them, and having them on a flat surface so they can find zero when you boot up a game there is no actual issue it’s a problem with the user.

Funny. That's what I say about people who actually like the gamecube controller. Sure it's ergonomic but it's ergonomic for a 10 year old.
I'd argue maybe you're the one with tiny hands but honestly the Switch pro is just two flat surfaces (the handles and the base) stuck together to form a sharp angle on the grip. It doesn't even try to be ergonomic.

you can press left on the dpad and get a dpad up input, it can be fixed by opening up but it's not exactly ideal or a perfect solution

it's pretty disappointing because it's good otherwise
