There will never exist any game of any degree that could ever top what Nintendo does in Smash, and that is the crossover aspect.
No company could ever try to achieve want Nintendo has laid out groundwork for. Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Street Fighter, Dragon Quest, Banjo-Kazooie, Persona, Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Solid, all that and more in just one franchise that is a fighting game.
How did Nintendo do it? How have they created an unstoppable force? Why is every other vidya crossover title so weak in comparison? Why are there hardly any other crossover titles? Nintendo killed competition before competition even existed.
Okay but the whole point I'm trying to make is that why aren't there more giant crossover games? PlayStation All-Stars honestly could have been good, it needs a sequel with more refined psychics and a much wider roster.
The crossover itself isn't the focus, there are others out there. The fact the game is fun is what is important and made it possible to make the crossovers, in the first place. Even if it was all just Nintendo characters, it would be still great. But if the game was shit, flooding with characters from everything like Mugen would be innane.

Don't forget it took them several generations to get that going. The first smash proved it could be done and showed how much of a force it could be in rekindling popularity of less known franchises, and even towards melee licensing issues were abundant even if there were devs who wanted their characters in. Even brawl barely got us the likes of snake sonic and pacman, but that and pasbr essentially opened up the floodgates for future crossover characters. And by this time smash is a proven juggernaut, anybody getting in smash instantly gets more notariety and publicity than they'd have before, esp in circumstances like Joker who are exclusively not nintendo and thus reaching out to a completely new audience of gamers.

They paid for the rights to use characters knowing full well it would create hype for their game. Cloud was by far the most popular dlc for smash 4. Square, Capcom, Konami, ATLUS, they all have good relationships with nintendo, are getting paid to market their IP. Even MS knows with Banjo they are finally getting something out of buying RARE. They are also doing things like spreading xbox live app to switch and other platforms, they are clearly eager to spread their influence. I am sure they realize there are probably a lot of people who would potentially buy both xbox and switch, and that Sony is their only real competition.

If the game were made by any other publisher they would be too jewed out to take such a risk even if it is a great idea that will print money.
