Using the tech to it's fullest and doing really good graphics requires a huge money investment. That means that the final product has to appeal to the most possible people to recoup the budget. And that usually means taking out most of the character from the game until it's as safe and as nonthreatening as possible.

Old games were more about singular people or close groups making games they themselves would have wanted to play. Most of current games (and it stretches out to other big media like movies and anime) are in essence products targeting consumer bases - widest as possible.
Indie games made with that mentality are good, even if you have to wade through a swamp of "amateur art project", "3deep5u thingken", "dev's ideology GOOD" and "meta tweest lmao" indies to get to them.

It isn't looking good, but there will always be passionate autists that will do their thing and cheers for them.
