That's debatable really, as the leak mentioned a "Square Enix" character, with the two he/she predicting (one was Neku I think) being wrong. Monster Hunter beats Resident Evil in sales per game and unlike RE, MH has a game coming out around Banjo's release where the next fighter might be revealed. It's also MH's 15th anniversary this year.
Monster Hunter would also be easier to add then Resident Evil since they already have the rights to include MH content in the game and don't have to deal with issues with CERO and ESRB. I'm sure the MH team would allow a Hunter or a Palico in Smash since it is the biggest fighting game series of all time.

Monster Hunter is already represented in smash, rathalos is more than enough for the series.

RE is still the best selling franchise over all, with 91 millions over MH's 54, with RE8 and Remake 3 allegedly (and also obviously) in development, and a bigger media franchise with the merchandise and (sadly) the movies. Is not even close, and again, legacy factor across generations. MH may be growing, but is still not there specially in the west. A RE character would have the bigger impact on sales and on publicity as DLC, both in Japan and in the west.

Surprisingly there is a personnel teleporter in D44M as a multiplayer exclusive item. But since telefragging and teleporting was a mechanic in original doom, it would be neat to have it as a special that also pairs with the SSG grapple-hook.

Bayonetta was just the top 5 of character the could add. Wolf and Snake and even Ice Climbers were probably ahead of her, but being this the "grand finale" they probably discard any veteran. Snake probably could have work, but it's rumored that Konami at the time wouldn't have agree.

Why add a RE character that would most likely have trouble with CERO and ESRB when they could just add a Hunter or Palico since they already have the rights to include MH content.

People play Monster Hunter to hunt the monsters and how do you hunt the monsters? By playing as the fucking Hunter. The giant wacky weapons and unique armor sets are what makes the Hunters unique.

I admittedly like Doom as a franchise, but I dunno why people really want Doomguy for Smash. It just doesn't seem to fit, tonally. Heck if we were talking about, I dunno, Duke Nukem instead of Doomguy I could maybe see it more, but as is I just don't see Doomguy being who Nintendo chooses

The only advertising part of Hero is that they chose to make Luminary the default. Erdrick is a fucking legendary character, Solo is fantastic as well, and Eight is to shut up the westerners. Hero is a soulful inclusion.
