XI never did, and neither will XIV, the reason so many wowfugees go to XIV is partially that it's a WoW clone
I feel what really killed it was the heavy focus on raiding. The first two or three weeks of each expansion when you still had lots of shit to do were always super fun, but then you arrived at the raiding stage and it was limited to 3-6 hours per week, depending on how quickly your guild managed to clear it.
And apart from that there was fuck all to do.

Daily quests, M+, raiding, its all a fucking chore, designed to make you log in every single day.
Back in Vanilla, TBC, and WOTLK, we had a thing called progression, simply put, the more you did on your character, the more that character progressed, TBC was the pinnicle of progression because blizzard allowed people to do the first 3 tiers of content except BT on release, you just had to get your guild attuned to enter hyjal, which was harder then hyjal itself, and arguably impossible due to how hard and bugged KT and Vashj were on release.
But every since 3.2, the game has become 'seasonal', no matter what you do, your progression is soft/hard reset every patch, who cares if you get a ilvl 400 peice from your weekly m+ chest, you can get 450 from the same chest doing the same content the exact same way just by logging in after the next major patch.
On top of that the gear, the whole driving force behind character progression is unobtainable, you're given so much purple garbage that you stop caring, who gives a fuck if you have Scepter of Mythic Epicus, Warmace of the Black Legion, when fucking some guy does normal mode gets a titanforged version that is 10 ilvls higher with a tertiary and socket, just because of pure dumb fucking luck.
This is why I have been enjoying classic, I know what items do what and where they're at and how to get them, kill this boss, farm some gold and buy it off the AH, ect, farming pre-raid BiS on Nost was the most fun I had in WOW for a long time, but when I played BFA, my 500th fucking run of freehold and getting another pair of vers mastery bracers in my fucking weekly chest 2 weeks in a row was enough to make me quit entirely, and the worst thing is, blizzard won't fundementally make the changes to fix WOW, they view a problem, stick a bandaid on it and let it fester more and more and more so that when they add in a new system all the festering puss of bad game design comes out

Firstly, EvE is 100% decreasing in players, multiboxing does not count. Even after having the new F2P accounts it was unable to stop losing players.
Second, WoW is dying faster and faster because every update is just turning the game into a bigger instanced skinnerbox. Its not even an MMO anymore, its an instanced MP RPG where you do dungeons/raids forever. The idea of it having any world or community is laughable.
Third, even FF is absolutely dying, as is the whole MMO genre because developers refuse to make good MMOs without cash shops/daily challenges/achievements/ect and all that other stupid bullshit which ruins immersion and obliterates any hope of you having a fun game.
XI was out before WoW, there was nothing to kill but EQ.
I don't think FFXIV is killing it, but it's definitely doing a better job at not being a shit game after who knows how long.

EVE is mostly bleeding its bitter old vets, while having very little to no new player engagement.
The core gameplay of EVE is really really outdated, and the community building aspects are really bad, especially since everyone can fuck you over with no repercussions, which yes is a good thing, but there should be SOME repercussions, for example right now you can suicide gank in highsec with no penalty what so ever, I don't mind the ganking part, but I don't like the no penalty part, because of this everyone can just extort highsec, which is supposed to be the newbie friendly area of the game, which makes it super shitty to play in, fuck nulsec is safer to fly in, and if you know what you're doing lowsec too, but highsec is pure fucking cancer, and thats where new players start.
But for vets? Citidels and entosis sov has effectively ruined EVE's nulsec metagame, its not about power projection, its about noob spam, the citidel problem was so fucking bad CCP actually had to create an NPC taskforce to knock down offline citadels in nulsec because it became that much of a problem.
