When I played the demo, I thought it was cool and had a slightly eerie atmosphere but there was possibility for improvement.
When I played the full game, it wasn't bad but the atmosphere was completely gone, with the goofy characters, tumblr tier 'jokes' etc.
Unless you go genocide, then the whole game becomes full edgy.
Overall it was pretty good, but not what I expected and certainly not great or one of the greatest games of all time. The game feels too linear for an rpg, like I'm walking through endless straight corridors.

I'm and I agree that the one thing I missed in the full game was the dangerous atmosphere the demo sets up.

Toriel tells you along with Flowey and everything else in the environment suggesting that the Ruins are the safest you'll ever be, and that it's a real fucked world out there. It was pretty foreboding.
The game took a different direction from there, which while not bad, was different from what the demo led you to believe.

Played it for the first time earlier this year. I had fun, it's definitely a great experience blind. Personally after you get the main endings it doesn't really feel like a game worth going back to, but besides that it was a good time.

Susie is the 'edgylord that everyone is scared but actually has heart ! aaaaaawwww' whatever. Ralsei is the "cute cinnamon roll who is very pacisfist and very cute and.. cute and.." annoying. And the protagonist is less appealing to Frisk (and Chara). The other character seems' to be either okay, either copies of undertale character (not talking about Undyne, Toriel but the new characters like Lancer, a papyrus villain or the mettaton rip off)

But since Deltarune is only in his Act 1, i'll hope for the best.

I had a great time playing Undertale and remember the experience fondly

I'm very easy to please if there's great music, and even more so if the build up to the boss is intense. One thing Undertale does very well is both of these. I'm not even talking about the quality of the writing when I talk about boss build up, I mean whether it's memorable and creates a feeling of tension or not. The camera slowly panning to Papyrus's silhouette in the fog, Undyne having chased you silently before finally jumping off a building revealing her true silly nature, standing before the barrier with a shocking polite and reluctant Asgore. I can pretty much list almost every boss fight in the game, and all of them have great to amazing music. For me these reasons alone are what make Undertale so good.

2013 is not oldfag at all. When the demo of Undertale was available there was usually a thread up at any given time discussing it positively, people were excited about it. Discussing of the demo was completely different to what kind of discussion we get now about the full game.

Didn't play it until 2018 and hated it. Unskippable dialogue is my biggest pet peeve in videogames and Undertale is the worst example I've ever played. Every 5 steps you're interrupted, the dialogue is webcomic-tier, and there isn't even a fast way to get through it, you have to alternate mashing two buttons because A skips to the next line and B completes the current line. Some of the battles are genuinely good but they're few and far between. The game was a fucking chore to finish.

My opinion on Undertale has been the same as it has been since the demo. It's fun but overrated.

I'll be completely honest: I found it boring, ugly and the cringest "humor". I liked the concept of the combat system and that was it. Everything else I thought was overrated and had an air of indulgence in it, something like a game that is terribly aware of itself and its gimnicks.

I liked that toby really thought about how cringey and over the top a 12yo pretending to be a supervillain would act like, even down to his name and the names of his attacks. Whether or not I got emotional doesn't really matter, he did a great job conveying what he wanted to, and I can definitely appreciate that. The ones actively shitting on it for the most part got to know about it only when it got really popular and got turned off by overhype.
The original Deltarune threads proved that there are still a lot of people here that enjoyed it and just stayed out of the later UT threads since it consisted of 99% shitposting and there wasn't much to talk about for such a short game.

Being someone who really enjoyed Undertale it's important to recognize not EVERYONE needs to like this game. There are many valid criticisms that could be levied against it's lackluster combat and the humor is clearly designed for a specific target audience.

Exact same for me. I saw the gif of Mettaton doing poses, and I started watching a let's play up to somewhere after Papyrus's fight. The rest of the game I played myself fully blind.

Weird thing is, at times I started to feel tired of the game, but I was really curious to see how that Mettaton gif ended up happening and that largely motivated me to finish the whole thing. I wasn't disappointed either, his fight ended up being my favorite part of the game.

I still like it a lot, and I find it funny that Undertale makes so many people so upset even years later.

The game has one cool mechanic (bullet hell and timing based combat).
You can only play battles once per playthrough. The game is bogged down with very long, unskippable cutscenes that stop being funny after watching them once.
I died a few times to the dog boss you had to pet, and the walk back to him + watching the cutscene took so long it made me want to quit.
Mechanics are introduced and then thrown out pushing lillypads, the shooting minigame puzzle, etc.)
The map felt weird and and I never felt a real sense of exploration.
The demo was very promising and had an interesting Yume Nikki/OFF feel to it, with a bafflingly good meta aspect (sparing or killing toriel had consequences for your next playthrough). I thought the atmosphere present in the demo was very good. It felt like a quiescent, well paced dreamlike scenario where you could explore mysterious ruins at your own pace.
Looking out over the ancient city (or whatever it was) at the end of the demo made me feel excited and mystified as to what the rest of the game would be like.
Unfortunately the game did not deliver on continuing this atmosphere and instead focussed on hit or miss humour and lurid art.
The story was uninteresting and ultimately quite useless. It served to contextualise the events of the game but instead of delivering it in a subtle way like (for example) Ib did, it forcefeeds you all of it right at the end.

All in all I think Undertale is worth playing but when you ignore the tumblr style wacky characters (that for me personally did nothing) you're left with very little to care about. If there was a way to skip cutscenes, a boss rush mode, and a bit more meat to the sections between major battles I would like this game a lot more.

The ost is just so good, my favourite track is "Field of Hopes and Dreams", hearing it made me feel the excitement and nostalgia of every jrpg i've ever played, DQ, FF,SF, Pokeman. I gave up on indie fanatics overhyping ever indie game that gets even the slightest amount of attention. I usually stick to the indies not overhyped, since they generally lack the shit that makes those audiences rave and turn me off.

It helps to listen to the OST in order, or in-game. Previous songs in the soundtrack plant the seeds for future tracks.

I just gave it another shot recently. I sorta let the awful fanbase and Yea Forums's hate of the game dictate my opinion of it, which was a mistake on younger me's part 'cause it's a pretty neat game.
The meta 4th wall stuff kinda sucks but it doesn't ruin the game like Yea Forums thinks it does.
Asriel is a really good character and his motivation being more or less social/emotional isolation is really cool and fits in great with the game's themes. the design and music in the final boss fight were kino as well.
Pacifist route is great overall, the character building, world building, and extra writing make a lot of characters seem less 2-dimensional.
I really like how, in Genocide route, your character acts differently once activating the route, without you needing to choose to do so. Like it just assumes that a genocidal maniac wouldn't, for example, put up with Papyrus' stupid puzzles. In a game like Mass Effect for example, each moral action is a choice you make separately , so you could just switch from being nicest person ever to evil psychopath whenever you want. whereas in Undertale, it just assumes what your morals are and changes around the story based on that, which is really fuckin cool imo, even if Undertale is a game where this isn't that hard to develop for/do.
It's pretty neat, and like 8/10 to me. Feel like it's not fully realized more than anything, which is why I'm exited for Deltarune 2 or whatever Tobys planning.

I didn't love Undertale, but I definitely enjoyed it.
My problems were with how preachy the game gets, as well as how disappointing True Pacifist and Genocide are compared to any variation of the Neutral Route.
Deltarune, at least so far, is more enjoyable than Undertale to me. Has basically everything I liked about the original, and the things I didn't like are either gone or not as bad.

We don't know when Frisk fell, but most people assume it's been at least 100 years because most Monsters in the town don't know what Humans look like, even though 7 humans had fallen before Frisk.
Also, Deltarune takes place in 202X. Ralsei's manual is in the sprite sheets and it has 202X written on it.

Not to mention, if it's mean to be "an accurate depiction of how shit it is to genocide people" then why isn't True Pacifist just as hard, considering that it's the most idealistic, fairy-tale ending in the game?

Ralsei is one character who can only really tell you to do things, and cannot force you. Quite different from structuring an entire game around a message.
