There's only so much you can do in a cabin, in my my mind you spend the few daylight hours doing your routine then you come back and craft/cook/clean your rifle/look through clues while keeping the fireplace lit and by forcing the player to leave and go into the wilderness the cabin is comfier when you return but that's more of a gameplay loop

Check the weather, the trick is to do your water. can upgrade a day before it rains, not sure if I'm being clear. As for your question, if you miss one day, nothing should happen to them. The plants are just going to need one extra day to harvest, miss two or more days and they start dying though.
