Bull fucking shit, the narrative was much weaker here than DT for one. The main narrative starts much earlier than in DT than in BiS, and the MAIN FOCUS villian was both introduced and was established as the driving force of the story long before Dark Star was, giving both more stakes and more time for you to get to know him. and Dark Star wasn't compelling at all. The MOST interesting thing he did was become Dark Bowser, and EVEN then he was only so intimating because FAWFUL. He was a fucking awful villain and a bog-standard mcguffin.

Dark Star is carried by Fawful, one of the best Mario villains, and he got an awesome final boss fight. Dark Star gives the impression of something truly dangerous. Antasma was cucked by Bowser, and Bowser was an okay-at-best villain in that game. That's really all you need to know.

What I'm stunned at is how well the themes fit. They just seem to understand atmosphere and thematic tone. Smithy is a robust, industrial machine so his theme sounds like clanging in a factory and heavy drum beats. Fawful is a wacky nutjob, but he's almost all powerful so his theme needs to fit that. Dimentio is a jester/clown with the same all powerful status, so his needs to be a spectacle of a show. My favorite has to be Antasma, since I'm a sucker for violins. They're nature's perfect instrument.

I overall liked Color Splash's narrative, but yeah, they really fucking dropped the ball here. It wasn't even that Bowser was the villian again, but nowhere near as interestingly pulled of like as first game or M&L, it was that the build up for the Black Paint in it's backstory and how it seemed alive was fucking wasted

Also you're discounting obvious ones like Bowser accidentally upstaging Grodus and Bowser playing Antasma like a fiddle and betraying him. Brains are for nerds.
I mean sure I can see how a lot of other Mario villains organize bigger, more complicated plots than Bowser. Guys like Fawful and Smithy throw Bowser directly into positions of weakness but Bowser crushes them every time. Even if we accept that Bowser isn't the most competent villain in his universe he's by far the most effective. Fawful's literally dead because Bowser's natural defense mechanism in life-or-death is to grow 100 times in size.
Bowser also seems to be a pretty great and beloved ruler which is almost always more than any of the other villains can say.
