Why is the first Mass Effect so different and better from the rest?

It's hard for me to find the right words, but everything from soundtrack to pacing together result in an experience that is very immersive, pleasantly calm and even nostalgic somehow, for reasons I don't quite understand.

As jank as fuck as the original game is the first game is a real RPG and actually had imagination.

Its an RPG first and an action game second. The rest and action games first and RPGs second. The first had the goal of being a massive space opera and being epic. Everything after that had no such ambitions.

Would you say that the sequels also qualify as "space operas"? I'm not sure how to define this genre, but by my vague understanding of it, only the first game feels like one.

Better question is didn't they make an Advent Rising trilogy.
