Game

>game
>can't break or move anything
>can't jump or climb onto simple low platforms
>have to go through the predetermined foot path
>combat is clearly separate from non-combat
>can't use moves or attack freely outside of combat
>can't clear simple obstacles or barriers
>can't interact with NPCs outside dialog
>NPCs just stand around waiting for you
>everything is perfectly scripted and predetermined and nothing can occur outside of that script
>the only interaction with the game is going through the motions - no choices or branching whatsoever

What's the fucking point then really? Why make it a game at all?

Pic semi-related, BotW is a rare example of a game series being relieved of its stiffness.

BotW has honestly ruined other open world games for me. Every time I play an open world game now, my mind keeps drifting back to BotW, thinking about how much better it is and wishing the game I was playing could be more like it.

BOTW for me was the most soulless open world game. I hate Bethesda games but even those have more to do and have better music design. Totally wasted potential.

>more to do

You can't go more than 30 seconds in any direction in BotW without stumbling across something engaging. Its ultimately just a far better designed game and more fun to play. But that's just my opinion. No 'fense.

>music design

>Pic semi-related, BotW is a rare example of a game series being relieved of its stiffness.
Based.

For once OP has a good opinion on videogames.

I know that feel, but I deal with it by keeping different mindsets for different games, even ones in the same genre.

>BOW
>engaging
That's a really dumb opinion.

Yes.

BOTW isn't stiff like OP says, but as a game it's quite bad. MGSV of Zelda.

literally the complete opposite for me

every 20 seconds I found something to explore in BOTW, it was amazing.

what a horrible opinion

BOTW has a great framework but the game it's applied in leaves a lot to be desired. It's similar to Assassins' Creed in that regard, very technically and technologically competent series, but the actual games could be better, if we could merge the gameplay possibilities of BOTW and AC, with the world design of Bethesda or Rockstar, and story freedom of New Vegas, we'd have a GOTYAY on our hands.

When you break it down, there's nothing worth while to find. No hover boots, power gloves, hookshots, etc. Just useless ephemeral stuff. Combat as well is pointless, rupees are completely pointless, etc. Not even the main quests were interesting let alone the side quests.

If they just put an actual Zelda game inside it would have been GOTYAY.

>>can't interact with NPCs outside dialog
>>NPCs just stand around waiting for you
that's botw tho

A game hitting all those points doesn't exist, BotW was a huge step in the right direction for the series, but it has never been story/character-focused so it was kind of expected

>game lets you use weapons in the world
>boomerang pierces enemies and does return damage but it can also grab distant items
>grapple hook reaches farther but you can also grab onto ceilings and swing on it
>hammer knocks out enemies but you can also use it to hammer in stakes or break barriers
>sword is fast but also lets you cut down branches and foliage obstacles

>world design of bethesda or Rockstar
I can't think of a game better than BOTW in that regard.
Maybe morrowind gets close enough.
I agree for the story freedom

More games should have climbing. It's absolutely awesome, and really opens up the game.
After BOTW and The Witcher 3, it's very silly to be in a game where you can't climb over a little ledge.

>playing TP after BotW
>start to miss all the cool shit I can't do and how limited everything is

Seeing as TP has boats, birds, the wolf form, and the hookshot it's a game with cooler shit to do.

>another seething sony tranny trying to convince people BOTW is bad 2 years after release by lying about the game
the game isn’t even relevant anymore why do you still talk about it

>binge on Terraria for about 50 hours straight
>go back to BOTW
>miss the ability to fish
>feel sad that rain doesn't drastically change the world
>miss 60 FPS
>miss the ability to dig underground, create houses, and order around NPCs at my whim
>just go right back

After playing Terraria, I just can't stomach any other game. BOTW comes closer than any other game, but it just can't scratch that itch.

This. I decided to play Skrum after I was done with BotW, holy shit did my character felt stiff and the combat was uneventful. I wanted to climb mountains but the only way was to follow the road around the mountain and getting anywhere was a slow drag.
