How do we fix the turn based genre?

i'm not prepared for this
you can't fix what is already broken, user
Wut
Press A to pound!
Fixing turn-based combat:
>Characters have something to do while others have their turn
>Able to switch between a battle screen similiar to Dragon Quest where the enemies are the only thing on screen and a battle screen similiar to classic Final Fantasy with Heroes on one side and Enemies on the other side
>Unique Battle Menu
We can't. Turning bases was a horrible idea from the get-go.
Let it die.
MMO cooldowns style is the only fun type of turn based
>turn based genre
it's not a genre, son.
wow haha
kill urself my dude
it won't die.
Not every zoomer is a retard.
There's not enough depth in most turn based combat
A bit off topic but I have a statement to make:
Turns with time bars suck ass.
I mean time bar turns like in FF7.
Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to make the player wait 1 minute for each character to be ready to access their battle menu?
Combine this with random encounters and the game becomes unnecessarily long because each fight you either try to flee (and fail) or it takes you 5 minutes to kill a team of slimes that appears after you take another 3 steps in the overworld
Change my mind
"Turn Based" isn't a genre you fucking retarded nimrod brainlet zulu nigger.
Turn based what? Rpgs? Rts?
Also fuck anyone who feels the need to post anime femoids in the op.
>characters have something to do while others have their turn
Like what?
>Able to switch between a battle screen similiar to Dragon Quest where the enemies are the only thing on screen and a battle screen similiar to classic Final Fantasy with Heroes on one side and Enemies on the other side
Meaningless
>Unique Battle Menu
Like what? Unless it introduces a new mechanic this is meaningless as well
Strategy
or in non-turn-based combat. Simple fact that most games are shallow.
You typically can't even control more than a single character in a non-turn-based game, at least not without heavy scripting and AI.
the SM anime is ending
>change my mind
There's no need, you're objectively correct. FFX system is functionally identical to ATB without the "Active" functionality and its an objectively better system as a result. What other games have this type of turn system?
>Meaningless
not that guy but I think for some games it could be worth separating the combat world from the exploration/NPC world. Focus on making the gameplay maps really rich and interesting, without worrying about having to tie them into a fully connected and realistic open world.
>Like what?
Forgive me for mentioning it but (((Undertale))) made you dodge attacks. You could also just make them do something that reduces the damage taken.
>Meaningless
Nice aesthetic change
>Like what? Unless it introduces a new mechanic this is meaningless as well
Persona5's battle menu is fucking great because you see all options, can easily access them (instead of searching for minutes) and each one opens a visually pleasant mini menu. Just make something that is around your character.
IMO most games with turn based combat slow the player down a lot when it could easily go a little faster
Mostly Final Fantasy games before Square decided to remove turn based combat from the series. Started with FF7 I think
Chrono Trigger also has a time bar but it also gives you the option to switch to a timeless turn based combat so I dont think it counts.
just make final fantasy tactics again, having control over movement keeps it from being stale
or make deadfire with dos2 maps and high ground mechanics
this shit is piss easy but devs manage to fuck it up somehow
>What other games have this type of turn system
It was done in Final Fantasy Tactics first, and the Tactics Ogre system uses slightly different math but winds up with an extremely similar system where each unit has its own countdown to active-turn. Personally for an "individual character" based game I find this system FAR superior to the phased or round-based systems common in other games. Now in a tactical wargame you might want to be simulating the role of a battle commander and whatnot and in that case sometimes phases or rounds make sense but for RPG combat the quasi-ATB is great.
that said:
>FFX system is functionally identical to ATB without the "Active" functionality and its an objectively better system as a result
No. Wrong.
The original games that used the real ATB system are great, and definitely work as well as they do because of the real-time dynamic. In FFIV for example there's a real interesting dynamic where you can feel the rhythm of the gameplay and make predictions about how the order of events will play out, and make decisions appropriately. The FFT/FFX system removes this dynamic entirely and if it was applied to FFIV the game would be less fun.
Though yes, by FFIX the ATB system had become bloated garbage, and the FFX system was an obvious upgrade. But back in 1990 when ATB was first introduced, the games made with it used it well.
I don't disagree with you but that's not what's meaningless. Being able to switch between DQ/Earthbound view and pic related FF View doesn't serve any functional purpose and won't "fix" turn based combat (which doesn't need to be fixed)
Real-time systems like undertale/Mario RPGs take away from the strategic aspect of turn-based games. There's a place for them but most turn-based games shouldn't have a system like that.
>decided to remove turn based combat from the series
ATB is turn-based. I understand why you guys get confused about this but it's a turn-based system where the turns happen in real time.
I want to have primal, monkey-like sex with her!
Chrono Trigger is another game that uses ATB effectively and wouldn't be as good without the real-time element.
>wait 1 minute
a turn in ffvii takes less than 5 seconds, with slightly higher than Lv1 speed, ATB loads in 2 seconds or so
you fucking autist retard shut the fuck up and stop lying
replace it entirely with a good combat system or at least make it mindnumbingly easy like neptunia
Turn based combat doesn't even make sense, who the fuck takes turns in a fight?
