As a company they were already struggling when they moved to 2.5D (constantly cutting features each gen to ease their work burden), but now they're expected to crank these things out in 3D w/ 360 degree movement, at the same pace as they could barely manage with sprites in 2.5D and 4 way movement.

It is not an exaggeration when people say Pokemon would have died at Gen 2, if Iwata had not intervened. What they're really saying though, is that without Creature Inc and Nintendo bailing them out internally repeatedly, the mainline games would have taken a lot longer to come out, if they kept coming out at all.

I think the most egregious think is how bad the texture work on a lot of scenery. I have to constantly remind myself that this game is coming out on the Switch and not the 3DS. This is the same console that had Odyssey and Breath of the Wild.
I'd be more forgiving with graphics if it looked like they were doing something interesting with the art style, but it's the same as sun and moon, x and y.

1. Pokemon Stadium was made by HAL and it was only possible because Iwata was an actual wizard who reverse-engineered ASSEMBLY CODE of the Pokemon battle system into something usable on N64
2. Creature Inc made all of their current 3D assets like 6 years ago, not Game Freak. Presumably up until LGPE and Sw/Sh, Game Freak had done little to no animating or modeling themselves, probably because they are as bad at modeling as they are at coding and programming and balancing.
3. Fans would willingly do mindblowing work for little more than some recognition from the company (Tomato has offered Nintendo his Mother 3 script free of charge just begging them to make it available for westerners to buy), and they won't do it because muh nippon pride.

Look at how absurdly long it took to get a completely original Western-made character into Smash Bros, over 20 years. They don't want to give westerners an inch of influence or space in their own culture. In some ways that's a good thing, but ...

Even if all of these mons and attack animations were pre-made by Creature Inc, that may simply be necessary for Game Freak to even keep up their planned release schedule with HD games. That said as someone who never was really interested in the games, I'm more upset about lack of regional Pokemon and Megaevolutions rather then the lack of National Dex or shitty graphics. Sun and Moon was the first game since Platinum I was mildly intrested of getting a Pokemon game but I'be been told was shit so didn't bother.

Replacing Megaevolutions with "Pokemon but models are bigger" and having the same Pokemon constantly advertized instead of seeing how they can change with the world is what convinced me to not bother and at this point I don't think I'll ever play another Pokemon game beyond the one many years ago.

Mainly because they had a good decade or two headstart on the home market.

Spending loads of extra money to improve the games, the same games that'll sell tens of millions regardless of quality, is not a good return on investment. They'd have to REALLY fuck up for it to hurt their bottom line. I don't think Game Freak will ever be good again until they get new blood. They need someone like Takahashi from Monolith Soft in charge before they make a good game again.

The purpose of the franchise is to cast as wide a net as possible while prioritizing access to actual children. Despite this it is an extremely specific experience; you know what you are getting and parents know what they are buying their kids. Pokemon will never push any boundaries. They will always be safe, down to and including things like very simple animations. They want them to be understandable by a 5 year old and a 65 year old. Could they look better? Certainly. But that is not the point of the franchise. It’s a bonus that they don’t need to put resources into it. If you can’t understand this by now, it’s because you’re one of the fringe weirdos. Go play SMT or Digimon, they are for you. So is Pokemon, but it’s for a hell of a lot others, too.

Let's say only 40% of people that disliked the E3 showing are actually going to go through and not buy the game. That's 82000 dislikes translated to about 33000 sales lost. $60 for each game, that's nearly 2 million dollars. Using 900k to hire 20 well paid 3D animators nets a total of 1 million dollars and avoids this huge PR nightmare.

There's a more insidious reason though. They want to trap you into keeping you subscribed to Pokemon Home. I used bank once to transfer all my mons to gen 7. They got a max of 5 bucks out of me because I didn't need it for anything else. With Home, you have to pay the sub every single year, because you can't just migrate your mons to a cart. You can bet your ass it'll have a subscription fee, one that you'll need to pay to keep all of your legendaries.

Gamefreak has a staff of 140 and with the millions they make/are given by Nintendo they could hire even more. No excuse for their shit quality.

True, but pokemon also adds gimmicks, but then removes them a game or two later. Worst thing is that a lot of the gimmicks were either good or could've been improved more. PSS being removed in gen 7 made no sense. Only real saving grace of this game is that it's apparently back.
I can't lie with Unleashed, it was good, but gens was also good in that regard. But as they did more boost shit, it feels like they just focused on the 2.5D aspects rather than making good 3D segments. Not to mention Unleashed also impressive visually, and later games couldn't match it really
The thing is that they hire other studios anyway. Did it with XY and SM, had numbers way larger than their current staff working on it. Not to mention how the original XY/pokedex models were done by creatures.
So then you have to wonder, what gives?
