I’d enact a showerthought I had, play as some silent German conscript who got captured and imprisoned in an Allied prison camp, you escape and try to go AWOL from the Western Front. Meanwhile your old officer has deemed you a traitor/deserter and wants the men under his command to arrest or kill you, the Allies believe you to be an enemy combatant and even disconnected German forces ahead think you’re a spy that needs to be detained or killed. Make it a stealth game to prevent it from being the story of a German Duke Nukem one man army-ing both sides of the conflict, I’d draw inspiration from Manhunt 1 for some of the environment and gameplay.

1) jump abroad the "'murrica fuck yeah!1!11!!" military shooter train but apply its cliches to krauts and use it as a way to mock the mentality and tropes of modern military shooters.
2) Sven Hassel the FPS (everything after his 1st book is already about as realistic as CoD anyway), war is hell, protagonists are penal troopers (and more often than not pretty horrible human beings) stuck in the worst shitholes possible, war crimes are committed by both sides on regular basis and Geneva conventions are basically treated as toilet paper, the only difference between soviets and nazis that one of them shoot you for being an enemy of the proletariat while the other one gasses you for being an enemy of the aryan race, etc.

Just a few days ago I had this (not very original or special, admittedly) idea for a German-POV shooter game.

You're on the eastern front, just done an assault on some slav town or village. You got a bunch of civilians and soldiers tied up as prisoners. Your officer shows up, your buddies ask what to do with the prisoners, the officer thinks for a moment and tells you to shoot them. The rest of the guys tell you to handle it and bugger off somewhere so they break line of sight.

Now, you advance the game by just gunning them down and nothing changes.

Or, you shoot in the air and walk away, and the prisoners scatter and hide and nobody bothers to check if there are corpses because you need to get going with the advance.

Third option, don't shoot at all and follow your squad, resulting in the officer asking what happened and then chewing you out for being a pussy and having someone else go and kill them.

All three options have no effect on gameplay and only change the narrative slightly. Add multiple such choices throughout the game and don't lecture the player or force them to commit atrocities.

So basically Spec Ops: WW2 without the game constantly going "OH SHIT LOOK HOW BAD STUFF YOU'RE DOING DON'T YOU FEEL BAD NOW" and actually having a choice.

Maybe in the end you could have an epilogue where you're in court for war crimes and your choices affect the ending, but I don't think that'd be necessary. The player will feel the impact of their choices without the game telling them anyway.

Also, different choices in each scene should never be "Press F to not murder children", but actions performed through normal game mechanics.

I've heard the Luftwaffe was the least "Nazi-fied" branch of the German military, so that would likely be the best route if you wanted historical accuracy.

The mass civilian shootings on the eastern front were technically a part of it though and Wehrmacht heavily assisted the overworked SD with it, in many cases taking over the process. Those alone are 2 million civilians dead. I could even concede you the camps and I would still come out right.

It focused on a purebred nobility german guy and joins the Wehrmacht out of the pure noble ideal of the whole Volk thing and later dies in the infantry. A guy who was his friend and ends up in the Luftwaffe and a very party oriented political guy in the army whose kind of possibly eastern descent dogs him throughout his climb in the nazi party. Guy just wrote it for his own catharsis to visualize how germans went for the whole nazi thing.

Contrast this with Les Bienveillantes, a French novel written last decade where the Nazi guy is a deranged intellectual homosexual murderous hedonist and it becomes clear we no longer can even try to understand without SJW's labelling you this or that.

The problem is that the most interesting perspective to address a WWII story from the angle of a german, would be that of a veteran from the FIRST World War.
I think the most interesting perspective that Germany has to offer would be the hypothetical story of a proud officer in the german army that fervently believed in the doctrine of german expectionalism and their ability to win the war, and fully embraced the idea of the stab in the back as rationalization for their defeat, and the story would be about him and his son who is now also in service age going from wide-eyed fervent believe in the new regime's ability to right what went wrong, to slowly having to come to grips with the realization that they're instead caught up with a bunch of incompetent populist thugs and the somber fact that their attempts at righting a wrong are only leading to WORSE wrongs being done.
So, a story involving main character that are fervent believes in nationalism, militarism, and who are, at least at first, supportive of the policies and decisions of the most reviled regime in recent human history. Every journalist in the world is going to be crying tears of blood because of it.

The Blitz went from October 1940 to May 1941. and also primarily focused on civilian population centres and not military targets.

The Luftwaffe had conceded a loss in the Battle of Britain and therefore decided to give up and just bomb cities instead, which as analysts have uncovered, a sustained carped bombing campaign on civilians isn't a very effective way of winning the war. They THEN gave up to participate in Operation Barbarossa but it's clear that the Germans didn't learn much because by winter 1941/1942 they were losing all of their Airlift capability and having to draft their bombers in to supplement it.
