Nah, he did that to maximize the amount that people were going to be digging to generate more excitement over the game. "Please don't hack the game and look for all these obscure secrets I've put in there" translates to "there's tons of obscure secrets in the game, find them and tell everyone about how much secret content there is"

People already don't like it when publishers insist on encrypting stuff for DRM purposes which ends up increasing load times and decreasing framerate. I have never played the game but just looking at that image for a few seconds I would guess that those are unknown locations connected in specific ways by roads that intersect in specific ways and the player has to look at the world map to deduce those locations by observing how roads connect? Is that correct?

No. The small squares contain the glyphs scattered arond the Chilliad mountain. They show you conditions you have to meet to make a UFO to appear on the top of this mountain. The big squares show some locations for UFOs. Jetpack guy is for military base and the first UFO, picture of UFO on the left is for a UFO on the bottom of the ocean, and the cracked egg just helps you find other two locations.

Data mining ruined games like this. You could spend hours every day hunting down myths and secrets and still not be sure if you've found everything. These days this shit is either confirmed or denied within the first month. Takes all of the fun out of it if you ask me. I also miss being a child and being unable to comprehend the limitations of game engines. ANYTHING was possible for all I knew. Who knew what was actually out there in any game world?
