I'm playing for the first time now, 8 hours in and loving it.
The fact that most the character from this game are still relevant today should tell you the impact the game had.
It's alright, I played it for the first time this year, materia was a little half baked but there characters were MOSTLY good, not all of them are worth remembering. The narrative has the advantage of having Sephiroth teased from the beginning so there's a lot of catharsis by the end while other final fantasy games sometimes like to pull the final boss out of literally nowhere.
The story is bad but it's a good game. It was one of the few games that was based in a dystopian rather than a fantasy at it's time. Why people think the characters dying is probably because you're entirely the cause of it. I mean, at the beginning of the game you're violence caused millions of people to die

I played it for the first time a year ago. I'm a big JRPG fan (especially FF) but never got around to it. So take what I say with whatever size grain of salt you think that warrants.
I thought it was one of the best JRPGs I've ever played. The combat is pretty standard, but the materia system makes it a lot more interesting because of the absolute wacky bullshit you can do with it.
The characters are all mostly likeable, all have some development, and are mostly really well fleshed out to begin with. The only issue i see with this is there are a few optional characters. So end game cutscenes that have the "whole" party in it will exclude the optional characters which makes it a bit awkward.
The biggest draw to me was the narrative though. Playing as ecoterrorists that you're supposed to empathize with is really interesting on the whole JRPG landscape. Also there's some really forward thinking themes of environmentalism and anti-corporatism. On top of that Cloud is a really interesting character with a bunch of spoilery twists and turns that I won't go into.
It's honestly worth the play. Yeah it's pretty lengthy, but I enjoyed the hell out of it and it'll make your playthrough of the remake a lot more fun to see the differences.
The materia gets better when you get to disk 2-3 (which is long, dont play that long if you hate it). You start getting better stuff like the enemy skills, 2x cuts, and ultima.
I dont like jrpgs, but I like this game because the visuals and story and music are fantastic.

I just replayed this a few weeks ago on the Switch. I dunno. It's a damn good game to me. It has it's problems of course but uhhh yeah.
Stats dont decrease from my knowledge unless you have X amont of HP. It increases over time, including materia that gets born.
It's one of the few JRPGs from that era that have fast battles. FF7's battles are like twice faster than 8's or 9's.
Slow battles make JRPGs unplayable for me. Really hate it.
And they get even faster if you are playing with the x3 speed

It's objectively a good game, it does a lot of things right both in the storytelling as well as the gameplay. It is however, in my eyes, not the flawless masterpiece "best game ever made" that many fans stick by.

I think it's objectively good, though if you go into it nowadays you have to take it with a grain of salt. With a game like FF6, I'd argue that it feels pretty polished since they had plenty of time to work out the 2D formula. With FF7 though, there is occasionally a bit of jank you may encounter since this was their first real foray into a largescale 3D RPG. I still think the story is good, the characters are memorable, and that it has a fun combat system. Plus plenty of secrets off the beaten path.

I replayed it the other day and I'd still call it one of the best JRPGs of all time, it's really well made mechanically and thematically consistent. If you consider when it came out it's obvious to see why it's held to such a lofty standard, there really was nothing like it, even it's predecessor FFVI.
Midgar is great, then it sort of slumps into okay for the rest of disc 1. And finally picks back up for pretty much the rest of the game.
Its a bit of both. Its a good game but people have nostalgia goggles for angtsy advent children cloud but whats atcually good is clouds real story about his insecurities and tifa helping him discover his true past, plus the feeling of going on a massive quest that spans the entire world. Materia system was fun but made every character feel the same imo when you could just give any character any spell.
Amazing game and always will be. I think the only thing that sort of puts many off is those awful chibi models but had they still been chibi but with the details of the chibi models from FF9 I think people would be much more accepting of them today.
As for other issues, I would say the game is too easy and materia can be pretty broken but that is also part of the fun. I want to beat this game at least once more before I die.

It matters more in a video game, because in other mediums you're a passive observer while in video games you're an actor. you have to push on and move the story forward, and you spend a lot more time with this characters. Killing a playable character is much more personal than killing an unplayable character.

And the only times really spent with her character are then early on in Midgar and in Temple of the Ancients, which is a dungeon I dispise. Hence, I spent little time with the character and it was hard to care that much.

FF has a long legacy of characters that may seem meaningful at first but end up totally useless and have no real relevancy to anything at all.
Red XIII is among the number, as are Freya Crescent, Kimahri Ronso, Gau, Penelo, Oerba Yun Fang, and Gladio.
So how many hours should I play until I can know if it's for me or it isn't?
I have been playing for the first time several hours in and out this year and I haven't been able to get into it. I find it extremely slow in all aspects, the conversations are, moving around the maps "exploring" is, the combat is slow as well, and all I want when I'm playing is to get to the next saving point so I'm just getting through it waiting for it to end. I've been playing on PS4, by the way.

I don't know how people are still surprised by this. Each FF only has very few characters that are truly relevant to the main story. Others have their own little arc but ultimately contribute little to the narrative. I would argue.

FFIX - Zidane, Garnet and Vivi
FFX - Tidus and Yuna

Eiko is almost important, but too much of her is just an expansion of Garnets importance, and flavor for Vivi+Zidane.

I recently watched someone blind play through it for the first time and it holds up. The characters are fun and have good chemistry, which helps carry the otherwise basic story. The plot twist isn't Aerith dying, it's the David Lynch shit you get into at the crater

Ellone functions as plot device yes, but the game is really only focusing on squall and his story. Laguna’s story is fragmented as shit and doesn’t contribute all that much.

I'm honestly having fun - the party members are likable and even the shitty NPCs Palmer have some sort of personality. So far Aerith's my favorite character, and I understand that there's a dating mechanic? I'm sure that she'll end up with Cloud in my playthrough.
Once you get out of Midgar, you've already experienced enough of the absolute basic gameplay and enough of the primary cast to develop an opinion.

thirding 'get through midgar'. Only two more party members join you after Midgar and they're optionals. Red XIII joins you very late in Midgar but he's basically a non presence for most of the game.
Apart from Cait Sith, i felt like the cast is one of the best of FF. All uniquely different, but all having solid reasons to join the fight

Actually, this is the "cover twist" that people keep talking about, causing the "real twist" to be hidden away from public eye even 20+ years later (unless you played Crisis Core/watched the Last Order OVA, I guess). It probably wasn't intended as such, but it's a lucky coincidence that makes it possible for complete newcomers to play through the game while still being able to witness THAT moment (pic related) and feel the chills from it.
FF7 is still the best FF. Everything else is the hipsters choice.
