The website has over 2mil users and over 3mil posted models.
Now how the fuck do you think these people are meant to market themselves when there are so many? How should an employer even decide on who to get out of that giant see of latent? Unless someone accidentally stumbles onto a specific model and say "That's exactly what I'm looking for in my game!" it's never happening

It easy for us backseat developers/CEOs/managers to say hire these people, but it's just easier to get someone internal and do a generic super realistic style

The worst thing about graphics whoring to me is that it's killed AA games. It use to be that you'd get tons and AA games coming out yearly, both from big studios as secondary titles and from dedicated studios. And a lot of them were very inventive or different, because the cost of experimentation was not quite so high. Now that market is almost dead, almost everything is either derivative AAA graphicsfagging or indies, and indies tend to be either derivative themselves (billions of walking simulators and platformers all with the same mechanics and feel) or have a nice idea they completely bungle. RPGs in particular have been hit hard by this.

Because all you need for your realism to look better is more money and more expensive computers and more trained monkeys in chairs, and the committee of old men in suits don't need to surrender their control to any one person. Styles take actual talent and an individual vision in control keeping it consistent, or you take the disney method of making a style so rigorously specific that you can boil it down to a set of instructions that any pajeet can follow and you end up with everything looking exactly the same.

If you're designing a character driven by shock, loss, adrenaline and an ancient chaotic neutral god's offering to help said character, you probably want to keep the physics a bit more grounded to up the stakes a bit. Cartoon physics lets people expect cartoony plot armor and such.

realistic graphics are both the hardest and easiest. Hardest because it requires precise engineering of the models, shaders, animations, etc. You will need good programmers for that. It's also the easiest, because there is not much room for creativity. A lot of it is already solved (for the most part), i.e. the 'rendering equation' is already known. It's just a question of performance nowadays.

Graphics is not that impressive, any compsci grad can make a proper renderer that is realistic (path tracer). It's a lot harder to have a distinct artistic style that is SOULFUL.

It seems that most people who work in or inspired by anime are singularly obsessed with girls and have no hobbies outside of fantasizing about girls (Not even real girls, only those they imagine). If there is another uniquely anime-trope in a game that has nothing to do with girls, girls will be aggressively inserted in to it until the other trope is near completely obscured by detailed drawings of female flesh. (See Xenoblade 2)

My complaint is not girls existing, rather it is the saturation of them. A different response mentioned the difference between "art" and "products", and I feel that idea best sums up what I am referring to. Just like one can immediately tell a F2P hero shooter with a tacked on battle royale mode is only intended to extract money and nothing else, many people have no illusions about the nature of those F2P turn based rpg-inspired card games that has a cast made up of every moe stereotype under the sun and includes a gambling mechanic as a centerpiece. The signs I refer to are not subtle or difficult to spot, they are necisarily over the top and excessive, else I would have no ground to stand in my complaint.

I used Xenoblade 2 as an example of cute girls being stuffed in to areas that have a distinct flavor otherwise. This is because the reaction to and content of that game is also over the top. Xenoblade 2 is Japanese sci-fi, or more accurately science fantasy. It has a bunch of fantastic concerning creation scenarios and what it means for the people in the story, much like the other Xeno games. As well, it also involves robots and references to mecha tropes, which is a VERY Japanese set of tropes. But, when the game was out and popular, much of the discussion was not about the work's properties as a sci-fi piece...

Because it had a large collection of cute girls and harem tropes, such that anything else was difficult to see. Who cares about scientists paying the price for playing God when you spend much of the narrative with a pair of bosom in your face? Everything else becomes necesarily less important than satisfying one's lust. If I am incorrect, I will gladly be set right, but that is the impression I came away with.

not him, but what if i'm designing my game's main character to be a lighter skinned black girl, late teens, knowing that she'll be praised by"progressives", just sexy enough to be waifu'd, but still keeping her mostly clothed. i feel cynical knowing that i can do this for free brownie points from the crazies, even though they won't buy my game. all i want is a "dark" and "mature" (see: majora's mask, but with red blood, and naughty words such as "damn" and "piss") game, with a link-esque character (silent protag, a set canon personality, but can be made goofy or serious by the players, by wearing edgy armor, or a funny propeller hat). does a character design like this overshadow everything else, because it ends up being "the game with the cute brown girl"?

And now it's more a reflection on you, if you cannot fucking pay attention to the plotline because it has a girl in it and you're stuck on her boobs, then that's your problem. The comedy scenes are never in the way when the game is trying to talk about Klaus or how humanity fucked up, hell, by the time the serious plot kicks up, the comedy is mostly done. Did you feel the same way with Xenosaga, just because KOS-MOS is attractive, despite everything it had to say?

You seem to be bent on arguing about this I did not specify, and are annoyed specifically about me poking at Xenoblade, so I'm not going to bother.

No it does not, because, and this is important: You dom't gamble for the opportunity to play as her. You're not encouraged to gamble for different outfits for her. I doubt there will be a mini-game about rubbing her up and slapping her breasts, and there is not 20 of her all veying for the player's romantic affection (While also being pure virgins who don't actually know what sex is).

I'm using Xenoblade only because you did, as I informed the other one. It's a bad example that you're trying to justify your point with, which is why it's easy to refute it here in this case. Or, at the least, to criticize your statements which now are bent around audience behavior rather than the work itself.
