The whole Gothic/Arcania collection usually goes for like $3 on various sites.

Don't do it. Currently doing my first playthrough as a mage. You constantly have to run back and forth between the area you want to grind and a bed, because the game does not give you enough mana potions. It is making the game take much longer than it should. Also you can't learn new spells without a runestone, so you can't actually learn every spell in the game.

You can get some runes for free and you should either get some dex or str at first so you don't rely on magic too much. Pic related is my build so far in chapter 4

I played NOTR few months ago and my demon ripped stone dragon to shreds. Try summoning him before talking to dragon so that demon has opportunity to get close to the dragon as soon as battle starts.

I don't have fire rain scrolls and I can't use the rune cause it's locked to chapter 6. I just cheated in 2 demon scrolls and killed fire and ice dragon by now.
Honestly it's way better when you play paladin or merc cause then you at least get to use an actual weapon.

when I played as merc, I didn even use a weapon. I just used the scrolls I had. Minimize monster is also really funny on a dragon

Mage is underdog till he gets last 2 circles of runes. I found palading to be easiest because you have decent weapon and you get healing runes to save potions unlike merc.

Mage is OP as shit as long you put some points in str and dex first and use dex weapons. NotR leveling system greatly benefits mages, as you don't really need to put a lot of points into mana, because you get a shitton of it from items.

Just stick to consoles.

I don't know, mage progression feels a bit slow at one point. I got through Jharkendar just fine, but Valley of Mines (chapter 4) was bullshit. I feel like you should get circle 5 at least by then.

Storm is pretty good at clearing out hordes of orcs, summon tons of zombies(claw of beliar rune) to kill dragons. Also, by that time you can have decent str and dex from all the tablets, and be able to kill pretty much anything in melee, except dragons. Single-target spells are garbage though.

Fire rain is not the only fucking good rune in the game, you know. Storm is circle 3, and it two-shots hordes of orcs. Ice block shits on anything 1v1 and in small groups, zombie summons kill dragons like nothing.

How to beat everything in early chapters as a mage:
>buy a wand that gives you +20 to mana
>obtain skeleton goblin rune
>equip the wand and summon the goblin
>quickly de-equip and re-equip the wand for free 20 mana
>continue summoning goblins
>swarm every opponent with 1000 skeleton goblins

How to get powerfull runes early:
>obtain ice block spell
>find a mage enemy like seeker or skeleton mage
>beat them to the brink of death
>cast ice block and make sure they die to DOT damage
>loot free runes from thier body
