What the fuck? 4 has much more content in the base game than 1 has in base game + DLC. 4 having DLC is irrelevant and it's all extra fanservice stuff that doesn't add anything worthwhile to the experience.

Switch version is good, but if you're not going to play it handheld you might as well get it on PS4.

I honestly couldn't really get into the series after trying a bunch of different times. VC1's story had me interested but the gameplay gets really tedious once you figure out there's no reason not to front-load your squad with scouts and nothing else. Is VC4 really any better?

Scouts are still strong but not nearly as strong as VC1 in VC4.

How are the characters in 4 without giving too much spoilers? I read on other sites that they're not as good as 1 and are kind of bland.

4's objectives aren't conquering the enemy base 90% of the time and there are lots of choke points, armored infantry and vehicles around to make sure you can't just scout rush everything. Moreover, other unit types have better AP and you can pair up units so that two units follow you for one turn without wasting APs so you can quickly move even slow units around and make them useful.

Riley is a pretty bog-standard childhood friend but honestly she wasn't bad.
Minerva is a bitch.
Kai is kinda dull but has some nice interactions with Raz.
Raz is dudebro supreme and enjoyable as fuck, most fun character in the main group.

Crymaria is alright, just doesn't leave much of an impact. VC1 and VC3 had more memorable main female antagonists.
Forseti is the best antagonist the series has had and also the hottest

Crymaria is whatever, but she's propped up by being the squad's rival alongside Klaus, who is a really good character.

Forgot to mention him yeah. Honestly the villain lineup was pretty solid, it's the first VC game where more than one of the antagonists were good.

Raz is grade A character design.

As handheld VC games? Sure. Though VC2 was literally made for people who would play on their commute to work or something, as the game involves a lot of grinding to purchase/upgrade to anything. There are a couple of cons to both games, such as the reusing of maps, but keeping in mind the limitations of the PSP, I'd say both of them a worth a shot at least. They both also have some neat features that don't show up in VC1 or VC4, like telling you what type of enemies will show up, and class changing.

Some tips:
>Make Avan a fencer. Fencers have godlike defense and can kill bosses in one hit, but have shit AP. Avan is the only character that can turn into different classes, so he gets class exclusive potentials, like double AP, to mitigate the low AP of the fencer class.
>Fencers now have shit defense in VC3, meaning they're only good for base defending
>Gunners are gods at base defending; they shoot in a straight line during interception fire and assists
>Flamethrowers can one-hit kill bunkers. They got nerfed in VC3 so you can't one hit kill anymore
>If you want really good potentials in VC3, you'll have to grind for them, as some potentials have a random chance of appearing to unlock them. Thankfully, however, you don't have to do this

>No Minerva or Kai optional marriage ending paths patched into VC4
>DLC still isn't on sale

Combat is the most polished out of all of them, but the drawbacks include insufferable characters, beta bitch protagonist, zero fencers, and worst LI in the entire series. Also, lancers are still fucking worthless for some reason. VC 1 has the better story but holy fucking shit the combat is straight up broken. Everyone has nonexistent AP except the fucking scouts.

If you're looking for a tactical/rts game that's worth the money. Go buy that new civil war game for $12; that in contrast to this, is actually worth easily twice as much. It's good enough that I have had more fun with it than total war and it's a tenth the price.

VC4 Switch DLC runs like garbage at times, Switch version of VC1 randomly crashes for some people, might be related to microSD cards, maybe. You should try VC1 since its so cheap, then later get VC4 Switch if you like it. Complete VC4 is all DLC, vanilla VC4 is no DLC. You can buy the vanilla and later get the DLC, it's not an exclusive remaster/remake kind of thing.

Worst girl blonde shit is the lead heroine in VC4. Sniper best ass Kai and Minerva best breasts hatefuck 10/10 can't be chosen as the heroine unlike VC3.
