I think Crash would be a fine pick, but I keep seeing people thinking that he's basically a lock, and I don't really understand where that confidence is coming from. At least some of his current buzz is from the release of the CTR remaster, so that wouldn't have been around back when the DLC was being decided on, right?

Exactly, a quick example of this (and it's just an example, nothing more). Acording to this Theory, a character like Dante is out for his color Red being used on Joker... even though that just as Joker is black over Red, Dante could as easily be Red over Black.
In fact, Joker very much disproves this "theory". I know red is the theme color of Persona, but none the less, it proves that a character only needs a contrasting color, not a "theme" color... which means that very much anyone can happen still.

Well, I suppose it's reasonable enough to assume that they wouldn't reuse background colors, but... yeah, that's kinda where it ends. If they wanted to have Joker alongside Dante or Lloyd or whoever, the fact that they all wear red wouldn't stop them, as you say.
That said, I'll point out that there's some blue in that shade of green behind Plant, so... maybe someone's coming with a more kelly green as a "main" color? Sure as shit wouldn't hang my hat on that, but eh, it's a thought.

Yeah, you're probably right. They all match so far (allowing for using red based on Joker's gloves, derp), but that's just happenstance in none of the characters matching each other. I find it funny that Roy and Ryu were added at the same time back in Smash 4, both of whom would use red if it meant a damn, but fuck it, Roy's got green now.
