Holy shit I was just about to say this until your post loaded. The other five characters have good reason to be there. In regards to Joker, the only thing I would really want to change is for the franchise represented to be "Megami Tensei" over "Persona", and I know I've said this before, but bear with me.
Maybe it's just me, but as it stands, Joker just seems so "seasonal". Like... he's a popular character from Megami Tensei's best-selling game in franchise history. That's wonderful, but he just doesn't feel like he has that history or fame behind him currently to support his inclusion like Cloud, Simon/Richter, Ryu/Ken, etcetera. Don't get me wrong, Joker/Persona was an excellent choice to both market the pass and sell as a standalone pack, but it just seems lacking in terms of a Smash Bros. inclusion. Dragon Quest handled it much better. Yeah they went with Luminary, also the most recent protag in his series, but then he comes with fucking Roto, Solo, and Eight. Each of their models show-off iconic or important regalia from their games, and their specials are sampled from all over the franchise. We've only got a glimpse at their stage and know nothing about the Spirits, but it already feels so much better represented.
In Joker/Megami Tensei/Persona's case, just add some traditional demon designs somewhere into Joker, maybe an alt palette (Kazuya's a good choice), or in the best case scenario add Kazuya/Aleph or Hitoshura/Flynn/Nanashi/SMT V Protag (if and when) as a fighter(s). Boom, there's finally that history to support his inclusion. Megami Tensei is the true progenitor of the Monster-Collecting RPG genre, why not show it some love?

There's just two to three things that would have made Joker's inclusion perfect:
>a mainline SMT reference palette or alternate costume
>traditional demon designs somewhere in the added content
This last one is subjective, and I'll explain why:

To begin, the alt colour you mentioned is an excellent idea. After considering that Joker's red palette was fashioned in a way that it would represent both Persona 5 AND Persona 2, one of his other palettes should have been augmented into another hybrid option. Very simply, just as you said, adding some white, especially to the pants, to the blue P3 design could have very easily made it a callout to the Samurai of the SMT IV duology, and/or Jack Frost, on top of it already being a reference to Persona 3.
As for the next point, having a traditional demon design somewhere in the additional content should have been a no-brainer. Silhouettes of popular demons showing up on Mementos, let Joker summon one for an attack or taunt (added bonus of displaying his Wild Card), create a couple spirit battles for them, and/or add some Mii Costume pieces. Jack Frost Helmet/Mask and Suit, Pixie's Wig and "Wings" (it would be her leotard, stockings, and wings, don't think it would be "overly sexy" either since it would basically look like gymnastics gear with glittery props attached). Any combination of such content.
As it stands currently, it feels like it always needs to be explained why Joker's here, why he (everyone Smash fan's favourite word incoming) deserves to be in Smash Brothers. My last point is that if they had just done both of those very easy to add criteria, the gaming history Joker has behind him would have been as clear as day. No need to change the labels when it would have been clearly visible for all to see. They're such small details, but they make a world of difference.

It isn’t great, the third party cast is becoming bloated, the need to cut the fat off and try to tone it down to less than fucking 5 next game, it makes sense that the ultimate smash game has the most amount of special guests, but next game they should look at this and be forced to let some of them go. Mainly Square, Konami, Microsoft and maybe Capcom.

I agree to an extent, some third party franchises should be given the boot next game for most wanted first party, it’s something the next smash will definitely prioritise.

Nobody cares about Jack Frost or a plain black mage anymore. Morgana usurped Jack Frosts popularity as a mascot and he’s been a mascot for a single game, while Jack has been for the whole series. All of these characters are fine, I just feel that Joker and Cloud been done better.
Cloud deserves his spot, but because of Squeenix being bitches FF's implementation is half-assed.
Joker is fine as a Persona rep, the problem just stems from the fact that nothing about his moveset in smash really screams Persona. If he is to ever return, he'd need a major mechanic rework. Mementos and the Persona music he brought are good though.
