I think this is an important distinction, for example I can totally see Arle being on this list for the latter considering how much weird shit that one mobile game crosses over with but I refuse to believe she's been in that many crossovers with other franchises herself.

The only thing more impressive than Capcom's desire to shill their characters is SNK's ability to whore out Mai at every possible opportunity. Fatal Fury wasn't even as popular as other SNK titles. How does a character from that series end up as the de facto mascot?

In all honestly, Morrigan isn't the main character just for a technicism. Yes, Demitri is an important character, and a driver force in the plot... but neither he nor Morrigan the MAIN driver force in the Darkstalkers plot, they just have a on going rivalry that get's interrupted by other demons trying to take over the world.

With that said, while Demitri is a former all powerful Demon trying to reclaim his former glory, Morrigan takes most of the relevant lore to herself, with her heritage to the underworld throne, her hidden power, and then relation with Lilith, and therefore Jedah, and she isn't even as "evil" at face value as Demitri is, so is easy to see how she is perceived as the main character.

Mega Man (Any version), Morrigan & Ryu are the mascots, according to Capcom themselves.
