Narbacular Drop was a one-off student project that was done and over with.
Just because Valve hired a couple kids who made ND doesn't mean "Valve didn't make it".
1. Nobody was making "portal" before Valve asked for a new game with the ND portals to be made.
2. Valve gave these few students their resources and talent.

Valve time is growing exponentially longer. Half-Life took two years to make. HL2 took six. I expect they'll get Marc Laidlaw back onboard and release HL3/Ep3 at some point, but don't expect it to happen before 2030.

Allegedly Half Life 3 is in like pre-pre production where a few people fuck around with it a bit conceptually but nothing serious comes of it.
Valve knows it's not worth making games to get money.

Half life 3 has always been in pre/prepre production, the issue is that gabe insists on pushing the industry standards but things stagnated too much and there's no real big leap left to make that would fit within the half life gameplay.
The next step has been VR, which is why they've been forcing it for years and their current focus is on making VR accessible for everyone.

Valve has always been working on half life 3 one way or another, you just never saw it.

Nah. Valve's a company; it's main and only responsibility is to make money. When they were a smaller business producing video games was a good way to do that, but for the past decade or so their retail operation has become vastly more lucrative.
