You should play by order, because every game has an ending that effect's Kiryu's live style, so it will be odd as hell if you go from 1 to 3. 0 is the only game people say "play it, but you will miss callbacks"

Every table feels the same and it almost feels like a waste of time to make money in, I can NEVER find Yakuza on the streets to fight and when I do they never drop money. Most I've got out of a fight was around 40000 yen, so I thought I could play Mahjong to make more but it just feels so fucking off.

Not that I noticed, the AI always cheats in all the games. Double riichis are absurdly common, ippatsus as well, and they usually riichi within a couple turns. It might just have started to become noticeable to you in 6, that's all. If you do the ranking battles you can see how much they cheat the higher up the ladder you go.

Dude what? In 6? They're everywhere on the streets. If you need money fight mooks in Little Asia or around it, they all drop money in the 10-20k amounts most of the time, and once you unlock Clan Creator you can earn a million from the final fights which last like three minutes.

It's either Thugs, Menacing Men or Saio Clan people, Yakuza are few and far between and I can never seem to find them consistently, so do they hang around a specific area?

Fight the Saio Clan. Yakuza hang around the outer walls of Little Asia from time to time, they'll start wandering around Pink Street, and if I remember right they're on Senryo and Tenkaichi as well. If you're in Onomichi go to the main road and stick to the bottom half of it, everyone that drops money spawns there and they sometimes spawn at the shrine as well but not as often. Keep in mind they start upping the spawn rates on the stronger tiers of enemies the further you go into the game.

About to bite the bullet and get Kiwami 2. What am I in for? Is it as meaty when it comes to side shit like 0 or as barebones as Kiwami 1?

It's roughly in the middle content-wise. Most of the substories are still like 1 but they added some newer ones and consolidated a lot of the multi-substory older ones so you have some more modern comedic ones. Just remember it's a different engine so you're going to have to learn how everything handles again, make sure you get combo speed upgrades ASAP and I can't remember if K2 had it but if there's a skill that lowers the downtime when you get blocked get that as well.

i wish the rest of the abilities were locked behind side content (real estate in particular is a fucking slog to get through and one of the worst minigames period)

It's different from K1 and 0? Or do you mean when the Dragon Engine was first used, which I assume K1 and 0 also run on?

0 and K1 are on 5's engine, K2 is on the Dragon Engine, it's the second one on it, 6 was the first, Judgment is the third.
