Firstly, if you want to learn a character, don't start with optimal junk, that's insane.
Learn ACTUAL BnBs instead of what the SG community has decided "BnB" means: Small decent things you can do that give you DECENT damage and you will NEVER drop.
Let's take Urien as an example.
[I cut out the Urien paragraphs because they weren't really relevant]
Advanced things are called "advanced" for a REASON. Give yourself solid basics that you can do WITHOUT thinking and WITHOUT concentrating and WITHOUT worrying and WITHOUT dropping them 100% of the time before you move on from basics to ANYTHING. This applies to all games.
Set a goal for a play session. Just one: Today I won't get thrown / today I will block all overheads / today I will punish with my practiced punish at every opportunity and not drop it / today I will confirm c.Short into Super instead of always committing / today I will parry all jumpins (this is a bad goal) / today I will stop getting hit by [x thing that always hits me] / etc. Focus on just that for a session. You'll gradually find yourself improving in all areas by concentrating on one at a time.
SG players, for the most part, approach learning fighting games WRONGLY. Got a combo that works for you? GREAT! Stick with that and learn to land it all the time while improving your defense. THEN move on to some other better combo. It is much rarer to lose by not doing enough damage off one opportunity than it is to lose by just getting hit a whole bunch of times you shouldn't have been hit.
Look at it like this: If I can do 10% damage each time I hit you and I can hit you OFTEN, but you can do 60% damage per time hitting me but you can't hit me at all, I win! Focus on playing first, and comboing second.
With all that in mind, playing against a person for 20 minutes is INFINITELY more beneficial than playing in training mode for 20 minutes.

But here's some stuff you need to keep in mind regardless

Rushdown characters capitalize on getting in close and dealing damage quickly, zoners keep characters away or control space, etc. Learn which character you're playing is what, and you'll be able to navigate things a lot better
>Learn everything your character can do and when you can do it safely. It'll open up LOTS of possibilites for you. Think of it like driving a car; how can you drive if you don't know what the stick does?
>Execution is only half of fighting games; your opponent is the other half. Never forget that your opponent is a living, breathing person, who can change strategies on the fly. Figure out what they're going to do, then act accordingly. This is HUGE.
