I don’t think Everquest players actively shat on other MMOs as WoW babies do. The most I remember hearing from EQ players was that WoW and modern MMOs tend to be very casual, and that’s only said after they invest a medium amount of time into a new mmo that launches before they return back to project 1999. WoW players on the other hand to be borderline fanatic in their hatred of everything not WoW. Is it a coping mechanism since they’ve wasted 15 years wasting their time into a game that’s dying?
This makes sense, they have a set notion in their head of what an MMO has to be, that of a hybrid launches they hate it with a passion. But that argument doesn’t apply to WoW though since these days it’s more of a single player game than XIV with very minimal MMO elements. Example, you can solo the hardest raid tier of the previous xpac as soon as the new xpac launches whereas with XIV you need a minimum of 5 other players to do so.

to even start working on elemental armor you need to reach eureka pyros, which would take about 2-4 weeks of effort while it was relevant, then you have to go through hydatos after that which would be another week, then you have to collect enough logograms to create 56 different combinations to start buying the armor
the vast majority of efficient progression through eureka is entirely reliant on having at least 8 players also willing to suffer with it the entire way

If you're used to level cap retail WoW from any time in the last 10 years, you wont have a good time in the first 50 odd hours unless you main quest boost.
The game is heavy story but the gameplay is dogshit. 2.5s GCD, and you get new abilities at a fucking glacial pace. Most clases dont have a full rotation until Shadowbringers.
The game is good. Its a final fantasy game, but from a MMO perspective the gameplay is hot fucking garbage.
Others will say 'but muh off gcds', you dont get oGCD abilities until youe 40s, which is a lot of play time down the sink.

Protip: the western playerbase is dishonest. You can put a PF up that says "please know the fight/have seen enrage" and you will guaranteed get at least 4 people who have not even once loaded into the fight yet. So I set it to duty complete because Itrust people who have cleared, fluke or no, more.

Sunk Cost Fallacy, when SB launched it was fairly mediocre while Legion was also only about as mediocre as Warlords of Draenor, which came out before FFXIV got competitive legs. Now with Shadowbringers having a more significant gap in quality to Battle for Azeroth, as well as the promise of a vanilla WoW experience coming (Whether it will be or not is up to speculation), WoW's numbers are starting to hemmorage and as such the types that both put large chunks of their life and memories into it and those that made careers from it are trying to justify continuing to play it so they can still feel on top and not have to start from the bottom somewhere else.

Tell that to my 60 hours into Mrd/war and lnc/drg respectively. You have 1 debuff and a 2-3 ability string until like level 45. There's legit nothing to do in combat.
The game in the open world and in leveling intances is tuned for turboshitters, you have a 2.5 gcd, and you dont get more than bare essentials until well into your 40s. Kits literally are not complete until you're more than 60 hours in.
Retail WoW is fuching trash, but i have more spells after 45 minutes of WoW than I do from 60 hours of FF.

You have Swiftcast and Triplecast which let you instant cast one and three spells respectively, Sharpcast which guarantees a Firestarter or Thundermaster proc depending on if you cast Fire 1 or Thunder 3/4, Ley Lines makes all casting faster for a limited time so long as you stay in the lines.
Aetherial Manipulation lets you fly to a party member, Between the Lines lets you go back to your Ley Lines if they're up.
Foul is an AoE you can use after getting a stack of polyglot and has 0 MP cost, Xenoglossy is single-target and has an instant cast, these two can be used at the cost of one polyglot each and naturally one's for AoE and one's for bosses.
Transpose makes you the opposite element of whichever you are but on Level 1, Umbral Soul refreshes Umbral Ice and Umbral Hearts up to three levels and resets the timer every time.
Convert is no longer called Convert but it gives you free MP which you can use at the end of either rotation for an additional Despair or Flare.
Manaward is a stoneskin just for you and will absorb a certain amount of damage.

Here's my honest critique of the game after starting from 1 getting to 80 and finishing SHB call me a WoWfag if you want.
1. making alts suck dick, there should be an option to immediately skip to 50 at least with no story quests if you have a character at max level on your account.
2. Combat from level 1-50 needs a complete revision, it is entirely too slow and as quick as it is to level the ARR part of the game is an unfun slog gameplay wise. It needs a complete overhaul.
3. Side quest either need a re-work or HUGE pruning, especially in SHB zones. As they worked for SHB the exp you get from them were way under tuned. I found myself not seeing a reason to do them as opposed to sitting in queue. There need to be more alternatives to getting EXP besides just dungeon grinding.
4. Fix the chocobo partner system, let us more easily re-spec our chocobos and let us get every barding if we go through the effort of resetting the chocobo. There's no reason why the bardings should be so exclusive.
5. Make Rogue/Ninja a starter Job, it starts at level 1 to begin with, why it isn't a starting choice now that the class system has been abolished makes literally no sense.
6. Re-work Blue mage into a full job, even as someone that enjoys variety open world content Blue mage is incredibly confused in what it wants to do, and like Diadem it just doesn't work with XIV's systems.
7. let us use glamour plates fucking anywhere, there's no reason why we need to be in the main cities for these to work. At the very least make it so we can use them in sanctuaries.
8. Cut down on aether currents or tie them SOLELY to story quest, finding them is not fun, it's an absolute chore.
Otherwise I think the game's decent for MMOtrash.

Attack animatioms need to be quicker (ideally as quick as SAM's shinten/senei) the tickrate needs to be way higher, and PC needs higher grade texture options. I don't think BLU necessarily needs to be a "Full" job, but it DEFINITELY needs to be a "Fuller" Job, like the 50 cap wouldn't been that bad if it could do story quests and at least Main Scenario (Let's not pretend that shit isn't a fucking joke) and have SOME kind of roulette for Dungeons and trials that has the spells it needs that gives "Level 80" tier rewards (IE:Seasonal Tomestones and Poetics) in spite of being level 50.
I actually have some long ass "Salvage BLU" rant in some readme that i wrote to went because i loved playing it and felt that doing 3 Karnivale fights i already beat a week is really disappointing for what is a fun class to play. It involves working in Beast Within, blocking efforts to legitimize the newly started guild. 1. there is really no purpose to alts, and in the extreme fringe case you mentioned of having friends across data centers - oh well that sucks level again or pay for a skip, this isn't a legitimate concern that affects damn near anyone
2. You're not wrong about the tedium of the 1-50 section, but it's not the combat so much as how much time you're in that section. The slow as fuck combat is a good introductory sequence, it just overstays its welcome and the story doesn't carry it
3. You know you can do side quests and queue at the same time right? I just banked like 20 sidequests and turned them in when I needed to level to continue the msq and it was smooth sailing.
4. This speaks to a broader problem about miscellaneous systems being numerous but not particularly core or important. Half the playerbase probably has no fucking idea what squadrons do for example.
5. Can't argue with that, it wouldn't take much effort and would be welcome.
6. They won't do that, it sucks but that's just how it is.
7. There is some technical backend reasoning to this I don't really remember, but probably has to do with their palace made of spaghetti code.
8. Aether currents are fine, you just need to remember to actually use the compass as you run around. They're all near where the MSQ takes you, and encourage a bit of exploring and seeing what the zone looks like.

I've yet to read about or hear a realistic or viable alternative to what is currently in the game. The fact is that the flavor of Blue Mage is in its spell variety, and the best way to highlight this was in the Masked Carnivale puzzles they introduced, forcing you to use a variety of the different tools you've accumulated.
Were the job balanced for endgame DF content it would just be BLM 2.0 with nothing to distinguish it outside of requiring the time to kill the monsters needed to learn its skills. There would be a "meta" skill loadout and rotation that would ruin the job's flavor.
If you know of a way where the job can be properly balanced in this game AND keep its identity, I'd be happy to hear it.

Because literally every expansion PLD's kit just gets better. HW may have had us in the cuckshed but that was due to game and fight mechanics more than anything. It was still infinitely better to play than ARR PLD. SB PLD went in hard on the holy knight aspect, giving us our magic combo and some other neat support skills. Up level cap to 60, Continuing Job Questline about helping Marten "Legitimize" Blue Mages, Antagonist wants to ban usage completely due the "Danger" of Monster Magic after a incident with a Blue Mage recruit "going feral".
Add "Licenses Plates" that allow you to take on Tank/Healer roles with Pre-Set Spell lists, but you need to have learned the spells in one before you can use it, Additional Spells and Totems added in the world to give more utility (A minor, cheap Non-White Wind Heal, Esuna, Shield spell,Etc), Gives "Blue Tomestones" instead of "Seasonal" Tomestone, and as such serves alternative for Level 80 players that hit their weekly cap and still want to do dailies.
Queue in Leveling Roulette and Main Scenario using said Licenses (This lets BLU fill out Healer/Tank slots for players running Story Mandated ARR/HW dungeons. lowering wait times for New players.
Add "Freeform" BLU-Only Roulette that only picks Dungeons with enemies that have Learnable Spells (Be it bosses or otherwise, so you might pop Qarn due Final Sting) gives "Seasonal" Tomestones and "Blue Tomestones" provided you completed the main Scenario (Shadowbringers). Doubled Tomestones if one or several participants learns a skill during it encourage actually letting learnable spells be used so people can learn it.

Maskerade 2.0 at 60 serves to unlock additional Liscense Plates, is still solo "puzzle" fights, still takes place in the same place and still serves as a show in addition to being "Test", this new tier does not count Self-Destruct/Final Sting as a "Win".
Totems for Primal Magics and other "Exotic" Low-Rate ones as well as cosmetics, they cost "Blue Tomestones" that can only be gotten from doing the BLU Roulettes.
Job Gear is Whalaqee Gear (IE: Blue and "Native American" inspired) rather then glitzy, for Hroths wanting to be Kimahri.
Level 53 unlock Job Gauge as per standard, Job gauge is "Beast Within", which increases when you case 4-5* Skills, and decreases with 1-2* Skills, When bottomed it grants "!Check" debuff that doubles learning rates for 10 second and makes any buff/debuff cast by you last longer, When Maxed it grants you a Swiftcast but what you casts will also cast another randomly chosen Spell that you picked from the book and instantly cast it along it and then a 3 second stun and resets. Or something a long that line, More there for flavour.
Still "Limited", but actually "revitalizing old content" and able to keep people playing it after getting all spells, the idea being less "Balance" and more "Play with Lowbies" with the Licenses preventing griefing shenanigans and stopping stuff like 1000 Needles spam in Satasha.
