When did this "wrpg vs jrpg" shit start?

When did this "wrpg vs jrpg" shit start?

Back in 2001-2002, this kind of rivalry didn't exist. You'd go into an EB and people would be talking about playing neverwinter nights and final fantasy x. No one ever talked about it back then. You could have an actual conversation with someone and talk about the pros and cons of games like grandia 2 or icewind dale without hearing "androgynous" for the fiftieth time in a row.

When, why and can we finally get the fuck over it?

literally because of zoomer faggots

wRPGfags were insanely asshurt over jRPGs taking over in popularity, this continues today

gaming became an identity instead of a hobby

Take a stroll through Biowares release history and you’ll see why people stopped holding them to same standards.

Fucking this

Jrpgs aren't real Rpgs. I respect people who like stuff like CoD and Fortnite much more than people who like any Jrpg.

>Back in 2001-2002, this kind of rivalry didn't exist
I had different experience. While internet as a whole was less outraged in general, these two categories didn't' overlap that much. Especially considering that jrpgs were mostly console exclusives and vice versa.

This is just lazy.

it's very rare for an rpg to be an actual RPG, including modern wRPGs. The reason for this is because tabletop RPGs in video game form are horrible and moving away from shit like D20 combat was the best thing to happen to wRPGs

This, FF6, FF7 & Chrono Trigger have been topping every best RPG list for the last 20 years. The argument between WRPG vs JRPG never had any real merit & was just jealous PC drones seething about how much success JRPGs have

Around the same time people started making fun of Squaresoft game cliches. Later on, you had smoothbrains who thought Advent Children accounted for FFVII and JRPGs as a whole to blame.

Its been around since JPRGs and WRPGs were a thing.

Remember when Square released a western only "Final Fantasy" that was super fucking bad because they thought western players were too stupid for JRPGs?

In reality both east and west had RPGs, though western RPGs were rooted in D&D and various table top RPGs which were much more open by design to allow people to roleplay, whilst japan based their idea of RPGs off of primitive computer RPGs like ultima, which are much more restricted due to code limitations, its why WRPGs tend to have more character customization while JRPGs tend to have more set in stone characters and story.

Most vidya RPGs barely count as RPGs reguardless of where they come from

You’re talking about fags who love Skyrim and The Witcher 3. They don’t care that Shinjuku Takahana 17 XZ sold 2000 copies instead of 1900.

There were too many for one person to play everything, so tribalism happened.

Also, console vs pc.

It started in America.

Everything retarded comes from America, except communism, that came from Europeans.

Dicerolls aren't really what makes RPGs RPGs, even basic as fuck tabletop RPGs like D&D are more of a ruleset to give players and the DM a ruleset to resolve conflict in a simple, east, and fast way, which is why people who try to play D&D like a wargame just makes the game grind to a halt, because the system wasn't really made for it.

D20 combat was one of the more egregious aspects, not the only thing

>You'd go into an EB and people would be talking

Jesus Christ how horrifying.

yes and no. the issue is the entire notion of the rpg has moved from its original intent, which was obviously to simulate action and the outcome of events numerically. the simulation element is now secondary, tertiary, or not considered at all. modern rpgs are just basic tier lists of options with some veneer of tradition.

It started in America because WRPGs are too bad for japan to even acknowledge them.

Webs on here

True enough, but really the issue with most computer RPGs is that they're not flexible, unlike tabletop RPGs which are run by DMs or GMs, and a person is able to adapt to what the players are trying to do, which allows for a much more fluid and dynamic storytelling system, while a computer RPG is limited heavily by code and what that code can simulate, thats why the best way to do computer RPGs is to allow people to simply play and build characters in different ways and offer different challenges and paths based on player choices.

Wizardry and Ultima being exported to japan is pretty much the reason why JRPGs even exist in the first place

god, i could never find a written version of the pump rants to use as pasta. if i wasnt a lazy shit i'd copy them myself

Except wRPGs are now more popular, at least in the United States

>casuals prefer "cinematic experiences" to games
shocker!
