4v1 or whatever it was is really fucking hard to balance, so it ended up being one sided one way or the other for 95% of games. The gameplay was also almost running away or chasing. The gameplay being shit and ass DLC policies leads to its death.

aside from the microtransactions out the ass, the gameplay was inherently flawed with horribly balanced "fun"
originally, before they changed the radar in the f2p version, it was actually very hard to track and thus trap the monster, especially if you weren't hunting with a group a friends. For the monster, this game of hide and seek was fun, because he was always doing something, and could see how close the hunters were. For the hunters it was just 10 minutes of running after nothing until the monster decided to fight on his terms.
The f2p version fixed it and by fix I mean make it less fun for the monster, but POSSIBLY fun for the hunters but it still had another massive flaw. In order to succeed as the hunters ALL 4 of you had to be competent and able to communicate on some level because every hunter role was necessary. As the monster only you need to be competent meaning that in the vast majority of games you just stomped. However the game was actually balanced strongly in favor of the hunters IF they were communicating/competent, and if they were the monster stood absolutely no chance (watching "pros" play the game the monster would never win the round, only delay as long as possible in the hopes their turn as the hunter would be quicker). Because of this, games were almost always one sided so long as the monster was competent.

4 player coop games are fun when you can run through them as fast an efficiently as possible, fighting the tank isn't the fun part of L4D.

I remember how fun it used to be for people to get their turn as tank, thinking they'd fuck their shit up.
Then eventually many people would simply quit when they had to be the tank at the worst times possible when the survivors had molotovs and the best weapons. It was understable because they'd just be votekicked out by the other shitty people on their team for failing to kill survivors.

The game could absolutely not be balanced, especially with casuals and pros being two drastically different groups. To top it off there’s a lot of design decisions that are just infuriating to play against. Like everything(especially Val) vs behemoth or Gorgon essentially just being a dps check you can’t really dodge. It’s a shame because I love the designs and the world but the aforementioned problems killed the game even after it went free to play.

It was impossible to play as the zombies in l4d2 without competency and communication. Survivors literally just had to not be retarded and stick together.

Cryengine. There are very few games that use Cryengine and successful.
