Finished my new Bnjo Kazooie level. It is based on the world Mad Monster Mansion. You have to collect the ten multicoins while revisiting various places like the church, the maze in the garden the dining room of the mansion and more. Have a look, I put lots of effort into it.

Bit Crusade 3 is the sequel to the two full games (1-1 to 8-4) I created within Mario Maker 1, reminiscent of traditional Mario levels, and (eventually) utilizing all 5 game styles. Meant to be played in sequence as an adventure game, starting at the 1-1. There's secrets to find, alternative pathways and other goodies as well. Try to find all 5 Power Pepperonis hidden in each stage to access the super secret bonus room at the end of each level.

Fun level but the enemies kills the fun out of it.
The random falling goombas at the start are annoying, and the hammer bro + lakitu combo sandwiching you at the checkpoint is stupid as well.
And if you manage to kill the lakitu which you easily will after dying 3 - 4 times to the hammer bro, you can just race through the whole level using the cloud which makes finishing the level completely unsatisfying

If your level has under 2% clear rate its either a kaizo level that took days to make or is bad. There is no in between.

Its common sense stuff. I'm not some super knowledgeable famous level designer or something. Everything I've posted has been in the MM tutorial.

Of course there is no right way to design a level, but I see time and time again people making really stupid mistakes. I honestly don't think they can design an easier level and have it not be boring. I think the precision jumps and generally overly busy level design is to make up for lack of creativity.

Pretty much this except I'd put 3DW as most bad and SMW as most good. With 3DW being the new style, all the kids flock to it and it leads to some really shitty levels.

If you see some mistakes, just say where you think they lie. People can use the constructive criticism. It's more informational than just saying "hard level bad."
Clear rate is also not an indicator of level quality might I add. A level with 2% clear rate or less might be bullshit or it just might be really hard. Maybe both. It depends.
Also, you're awfully fixated on precision jumps for some reason. Some people just like those kinds of levels. I don't, you clearly don't but some do. It doesn't make them bad or good: they're just not for us.

at first I was mad because hidden block bullshit with boo's, but then I thought about it and came to the conclusion that hidden blocks and boos fit. However, should be more visible that one has to look for them. I managed to damage-boost my way to the red coin without touching any.
Also the final part with the bullys can be annyoing. When you are on the Off/On switch and the bully is next to the ledge, its impossible to get up without taking a detour.
Still, fun level

the masterlist ist old, noone uses it for levels except to dumb their own in it.

Managed to beat Mad Monster Mansion and it's a level that has had a lot of love put into it. If you've played the game then you can really tell what most of the locations are supposed to represent. Bombs as eggs for the tombstones. The Ouija room with the cloud for a glass. The room with the giant furniture and the ghost hiding away the goodie. It couldn't have been easy to fit it all together. The timer is really tight though so it's not a level you have a chance of beating on the first go though. Maybe limiting it to 8/10 coins would make it more forgiving.

Pretty neat level you got there.

That level doesn't look nearly autistic enough for my high taste and impeccable sensibilities. There needs to be at least a million more things onscreen for a start. I need to feel like I'm teetering on the edge of an epileptic fit. What do Nintendo know about making satisfying Mario levels after all? pfft.

Played and beat both of them, and they were not very good levels I'm sad to say. You fell into a common trap of trying to use as much as possible from the toolbox instead of making the most out of a few mechanics. While you had the right idea with coin indicators for the jumps in the 3D world level, the way the camera works in that theme often obscured the safe ground making jumps feel blind regardless. This, coupled with you simply using too many features at once made it hard to predict what was coming up and react to it in time. They are not beginner friendly levels, they've got frustrating parts for even intermediate players. Also, adding Hammer Bros after a snake block section is illegal. None of your stages were bad enough to Boo, but they missed the mark to get a Like.

Not going to lie to your face even though I liked it, it's not good (the first one) but I appreciate what you're trying to do actually. Look at the maker lessons and steal from other courses.

Second is good and deceptively simple but I like keeping simple levels easier, as in I think it should be much easier to get the red coins as you don't want the player feeling disheartened by completing the objective but then being locked out.

I played your others, your concepts are all great but you treat the player like shit.

Great concept, do it again without the bowser fights as a speedrun level and a lot of people would enjoy it. Also work on quality, its like an 80% quality level shoot for 95%. I can explain what this means if you want

It's a really short easy level. Did spread some secrets about though. There are a few chances to get the cape, but yeah if you know how to fly well you can just cheese it like a classic smw level.

That jump is a bit more tricky than intended yeah. You're supposed to long jump to the top of the staircase and long jump again off of it. With enough momentum you can clear it pretty consistently. The rest of the course revolves around Z rolls and a couple more long jumps, but nothing quite as bad as that jump.

you don't know when they're going to jump or decide to throw three though as those are RNG

I've never seen a Hammer Bro throw three consecutive hammers in one cycle, and I've literally spent 10 minutes watching one. It always takes at least 10-15 seconds for it to jump too, and it will never jump if there's a pit below it.

Probably because its fullest potential is to fly over the entire stage. Then you design a track or something for it to prevent that, and the track will usually limit the powerup or the "fullest potential" will be finnicky at best to use without dropping to your doom.

being grabbed by a claw while you drop down into a death pit but then jumping out at the last moment prevents all other claws in the level from grabbing you

I made a boss fight in where a sledge bro is held in place by a claw and you have to throw a bobomb at him to defeat him.

If it holds a POW block then you can walk on top of it, but if you go below it then it drops the block.

If you wear a spike helmet and swing from side to side then you can hit things from below at the apex of your swing without jumping off the claw. You can theoretically kill munchers from below using this.

Anyone else noticing a trend in levels getting played/liked/booed? Seems SM3DW in particular draws a lot of boos. I've had the most success with SMW on the other side of things with SM, SM3, and SMU falling in that order behind it. Not sure if this is just me seeing this or if others are seeing it as well.

Great level, really loved it, but I feel like you could have gave it a better overarching theme. You have the cave filled with weird towers of enemies and a lot of mushroom platforms but the rest of the level is "standard" kinda. I would have used either everything in the kit or made the entire thing have the weird enemies. This is just what I would do though, theres nothing wrong with it.

It's consistent, you just have to hit it on the left side.
I didn't intend for it to be janky but after feedback it turned out a lot of people had trouble getting it down.
If you bump it before hitting it correctly it won't work anymore.

Reminder that if someone could choose between a challenging level where they know they could do better on a part they died on or a kaizo bullshit level they die 10 times trying to get past the first part, they're going to choose the challenging one.
Don't make kaizo levels bros, only japs and koreans like them.

Kaizo isn't inherently bad
Good kaizo should be reminiscent of something like Celeste or Super Meat Boy, short challenges where you can get further on every life and it's immensely satisfying to beat
Good kaizo should have a nice flow, where you move from obstacle to obstacle with minimal interruption (this also has the effect of looking cool)
Fake block spam isn't real kaizo
Muncher/spike spam isn't real kaizo

Depends on what you're going for. If you're going for a natural look then try to avoid too many straight lines and symmetry. If you're going for a more man-made look then make sure to use symmetry and blocks that look like they don't occur naturally. Also try to keep a consistent color scheme.

put some small vines on the ceilings of caves
use semisolids to get some filled out backgrounds
If you have large areas of closed off ground, open up a piece of it and put something inside. It can be basically anything even just an arrow pointing along the way
use slopes on the top of walls for cave-like areas to make them smoother

Right so its basically just quality assurance. There is a standard/meta in mario levels that you want to strive for in 99% of levels because the themes carry ideas and an atmosphere with them that when utilized properly along with YOUR idea makes it into a "proper level" for fear of sounding more confusing. Just look at standard mario levels and the story mode ones and go to the dojo to get a better idea of this, miyamoto goes over it in the expert courses I think?

Invisible blocks fucking your ass is very true to kaizo. Muncher/spike spam is the most kaizo thing there is.
Kaizo just means "rearrange" but the term was adapted from the game kaizo mario world.
SMM spikes are equivalent to SMW munchers. It's the only real death tile. Which is mandatory for forcing a player into your route.

When you're placing ground sometimes background decoration will pop up randomly. You can copy these decorations and place them at will.

Most people do but they're very fun.

Having fun playing these, Block Fort especially. Got some nice levels man.

Semi-solid platforms make for great walls and can help cut down on your block count. Unless the area calls for it don't leave solid walls just solid walls. Make cages and put enemies inside of them, use vines and those objects that spawn on ground blocks for foliage and texture, hell sometimes you can even use them to clue players in on hidden blocks. I recommend making a palette of them with the copy/paste tool and dragging it around the level with you to dole out at will.

Block patterns can make a plain wall really stick out too. Use a mix of blocks and slopes for both the ceiling and ground.

Kaizo has it's place even if I don't personally prefer it. Well made Kaizo stages are like giant reflexive puzzles that can be very stimulating to play. I'll probably never make one of my own though.

Level 1 has a 2 frame jump. Level 3 has rng dolphins. Kaizo 2 is nothing but a bad time. Kaizo 2 is like a tutorial on what isn't accepted in a kaizo game today.

The original kaizo series over the last couple of years has gone from a staple to something that most kaizo players do once and never again.

Toxic Amigo by YTLilKirbs (the guy with WRs on some of the lowest cleared courses, but don't worry the difficulty of his course is pretty moderate as far as Kaizo goes.)

I make levels where you choose how hard it is or if it's forced it's very short or not that punishing. This is sakurais philosophy and I really enjoy it this way as someone who has replayed old games a lot with self imposed challenges.

I am making 8 worlds with around 6-10 traditional stages in each world. All stages have atleast 1 pink coin to find, most stages have several and some of them are very hard to find. Difficulty of these levels is like 2/5 since it's world 1 but the coins can be tricky. Can Yea Forums find all the hidden coins?

Glad to hear! Like I said check out my levels the only thing is they take a lot of effort and trial and error to make. I spent upwards of 14 hours on Chrono and 7 on infinite milkbread trying to make things "feel" tight and nail the atmosphere.

I'm glad that this at least forces people to not spam levels (if they're even insane enough to reach 32 levels in the first place) but I hope people who get lots of likes/plays get an increased capacity over time.

I made three standard, simple, fairly short and easy platforming levels in the same style. I hope those wanting some normal Mario will be a bit satisfied with these. The third one was uploaded before and it seemed somewhat liked, but I had to reupload it to rename it to fit the other levels, since they're supposed to be part of the same world, and played in order. I took the opportunity to retweak the level somewhat, so getting a WR should not be as easy for that level this time around. I intend to have 5 levels per world, with 5 worlds in total, obviously with increasing difficulty for each world.

Can you actually spin jump on thwomps and plants in SMW and Mario U? How would anybody have figured that out in those games

Yup. I’m sure players figured it out quick cause spin jumps can defeat koopas and other weak enemies without multiple bounces. So then they try it on a piranha and hey, it works.

It was explained in the manual. And for NSMB Wii, when you see Mario spinjumping you can deduce if you played SMW that he can resist enemies.

It was much more OP in SMW where I remember you can spinjumpto bounce on pretty much anything like spinning blades, hotheads etc for crazy results. Sad they lined it up to NSMB's style.

I wish you could see your clear time of your own levels, even if they wouldn't count for WR's.

Both your level and your sister's are pretty garbage. But at least hers is short enough to finish before I quit.

Try not including snake blocks in your level next time. Or enemy spam. Or weird bits where you have to do curve jumps to reach blocks directly beneath the platform you're standing on, which (while not that hard themselves) suck as big mario and are like five times harder than anything else in the level.
Also the level has 'goomba' in the name. Why were there koopas in those pipes? You really didn't stick to your theme.

It's not fun, it's not a real level.

Only broke 100 likes on a single course so far and probably a day or two off on my second. Feels like a lot of work went into making them, both of them I spent a lot of time re-doing entire sections to get the pacing right, fine tuning jumps and stopping to think things over for a good long while. And they were both easy little 2 minute long levels. If one single tiny section is a little too slow or a little too frustrating the whole level feels ruined.

What's up with people changing the tags of your level to things they're absolutely not like 'Music' or 'Puzzle Solving'? Do they mistake the music tag for marking a level with nice music, like SMB3 Snow Night? No idea about misuse of the puzzle solving tag.

You can lock that feature so other players don't change the tags of your levels.

I will be honest I am going to dump and get out, I don't have much time. But play me and I'll (probably depending of the volume) play you through the in game notification system, later on.

So the level I wanna shill today is my latest one : 3R6-BCG-V1G. It's a big level based on exploration and puzzle for the first half, and the second half is more standard. Difficulty should be relatively easy, but there is one clever trick to do to win the first half.

fair, i tried to bring it back in at the end there, when he sobers up. i tried to make the coin placement, enemy placement, ground placement and sound placement all match if mario is high or not.

Quite liked this, once I wrapped my head around it. I wouldn't go as far as to say that it was deceiving, but it definitely required more thought to beat than I anticipated. Not that that's a bad thing.

I thought the first level wasn't too bad (a bit bare-bones, the last bill before the platform can be a bit difficult to anticipate but otherwise fine) but I got sniped by a thwomp on the second level and just quit right there.

Quite liked both of these, the second moreso than the first. If you want to If you want to resolve the softlock in the beginning, you could always just add a pipe that spawns a trampoline by the key block, or just add a platform back up to the pipe if you're less concerned with the idea of 'trapping' the player in the attic until they get they key.

Says course not found on my end.

Nice and easy level to go through. Kinda wish I knew that the upper path was just a dead end, though...

You could see that thwomp coming from a mile away. That's like the most expected forgivable part of the level.
