It's a pure Adventure game, all you do is move around and pick options for dialogues. The prologue released is about 3 hrs long and it's basically just chapter 1 for each character.
The thing about this game is that it's extremely polished and incredibly high quality, which is probably why it's taking so long. We're talking about detailed animations for a full length VN, I think very likely >30 hrs given the plot.
It also has an extremely complicated story, which might be another reason why it's taking some time to finish. It has cloning, time traveling, memory transfer and all sorts of SciFi plot. To make it worse, it's told via 13 different viewpoints and they jump all over the place.

That explains a lot, but Atlus didn't give any news regarding the game since the demo. I wouldn't be surprised if Vanillaware delay the game for another year. That and they have another game in production.

Hmm yeah they've been pretty quiet. Though they did announce localization for the west next year and the JP version is supposed to be this year.
There's still enough time to show it in TGS, but in terms of financial year maybe they can still push it to Apr? If it goes beyond that then something is really wrong I guess.

A lot of it comes down to matching your playstyle. Did you play multiplayer at all or just solo? What character? Fighter is generally really easy to jump into and enjoy but most others have more steps to get things really up and running or at least to be more fun to play. Having two melee weapons for cycling power smashes is huge for dwarf or two staves for sorc/wizard to never have to worry about elemental resistance fucking you over.

As an arcade beat 'em up, coop play is definitely part of the design and the game shines a lot in multiplayer, either online or especially couch coop. Something like fighter's ability to block for teammates or sorc's food spawning doesn't have as much effect without people to assist. Solo more favors amazon and dwarf and to a lesser extent elf.
Dwarf in particular has either straight up melee mauling, throwing based builds, or heavily explosive based builds which are all really fun to play.
