In Zelda, sure. I like the way they tied progression in BOTW. Instead of Ganon waiting patiently for Link to ruin his day, he's always accessible since the start. That actually helps the character development by making it about Link getting stronger until he's confident he can take on Ganon instead of just following a direct path of "gather 7 artifacts because the front door to the castle is locked"
But it's still difficult to get "chosen one" stories right, which is why Link isn't particularly engaging as a character, he's just a vessel for the player who goes HYYA. Even if we think of the basic Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey, a lot of the more self-doubt and soul searching never happens, because he's the chosen one. We know how this ends and so does Link.

Only Brawl has an actual story mode.They were too lazy to make another after that.

New Vegas is the only one in recent memory that went with that, and it was a compromise more than the design. The way it's set up is to highlight no matter how good the player character is as a hyper competent human being, they still don't have the history, connections, or resources larger groups do. You can't achieve optimal endings for every faction no matter what choice you make, either.

Solidus, back before Big Boss was ever going to be brought out again in any capacity, was Kojima revising the final conflict between Solid and BB through Solidus and Raiden. Everything Solidus says isn't just hard to argue, but is delivered with charisma. To the point where Raiden almost sounds willing to assist him just to spite the patriots, until they threaten him with Rosemary and his unborn child. Both Big Boss and Solidus give their opponents an out by saying they're going to kill them anyhow, Solidus for practical reasons and Big Boss as an act of mercy.

In the end, Raiden breaks through his childhood conditioning and Patriot brainwashing to fight Solidus as his own man, and Solid found meaning in a life beyond war, therefore inheriting a stronger will to survive than Big Boss.

The "can't join forces with Solidus" angle isn't as hamfisted as it appears, as the entire story shows time and again how he treats his allies. He is not trustworthy.
