Ace Attorney got pretty edgy around the end of the second game. The side characters become less friendly every game release at this point.

Ace Attorney has always been "somewhat" edgy with sexy characters and every trial being revolved around murder. The later games decided to add more shit like corruption and court room politics but it's always had harder adult themes.

It should have unironically been the opposite, ZE + AA and Layton + DR.

Ok. You solve Layton puzzles to find clues and evidence for the court cases.
There is a choice system and branching universes like Zero Escape you have to traverse to find all the clues.
Once you have solved enough Layton puzzles to collect evidence across enough Zero Escape timeline a trial commences.
The trail blends the presenting of evidence of Phoenix Wright and Danganronpa. Objecting to testimonies with the correct truth bullet and pressing testimonies for further info. With Scrum Debate and some Danganronpa mini games.
Between big cases there is a Danganronpa VN section talking to characters and levelling relations.

Dangonronpa is too similar to Phoenix Wright, its just redundant

tone of the games on the left are almost totally different from that of the games on the right, phoenix/layton are never in real danger
