3 Houses does not seem to be connected to the 3DS games in terms of plot so you shouldn't miss anything if you don't finish those games before the release date.

Narratively, definitely not. I found Awakening pretty fun but it'll probably seem a step down after playing those. Fates meanwhile seems to be viewed with universal derision. It's not a 3DS game but play Sacred Stones if you can. I can't compare it with the others because it's the only classic FE I've had the chance to play, but I massively enjoyed it.

I've found that Yea Forums has a high density of people who take the 'escapism' angle of videogames much too seriously. They absolutely must self insert into every situation and cannot possibly divorce themselves from what's going on onscreen no matter what the content of that story is. I'd say dating sims are a different breed, since the dating aspect is central to the game. It's pretty much the reason the game exists in the first place and the story even takes place. For that reason, people are going to play dating sims that fit their sexuality; a straight girl won't play a dating sim that's destined to straight guys, and a gay person is going to play a gay dating sim.

Fire Emblem is a strategy game first and foremost, which is the reason people want to play it. The dating aspect is only a plus (at least that's how I view it), so having dating options that cater to all the different fans of strategy games, gay or straight, is a good idea.

I personally don't identify with the main character that much. If the only gay characters were NPCs and able to date each other I wouldn't mind, I just want to be able to pair two dudes together and have them fall in love. I still enjoy pairing guys with girls, it's just more fun to me if it's two guys. Yes, one of the reasons behind it is probably because I can relate to these relationships in some way, but I figure that's what straight people get out of the dating aspect of the game too?

It's clear they took the time to think about what girls to make bi, including Edelgarde (Lord), Sothis (your tulpa), Rhea (head of the church), and Dorothea and Mercedes (two designs that were going to be at worst fairly popular).

Meanwhile there are less gay options, and two of the options are married middle aged men. It's clear that for the gay males they didn't think "What would our audience who want gay relationships want (yes that includes the fucking fujos)?" and instead just thought "What male characters can we make bi that none of our male audience will get disgusted/upset by?"

Nope, the 5 girls and 3 boys are all that we know of and have yet to change, and probably won't.
In fact, in general we're more likely to find out about characters we can't support at all(and thus are plot deaths) than more romance options.
