I haven't played it myself, but everything I've heard says that it plays very tightly and that the 8 bit to 16 bit stuff is nice, but that it's a bit easy and has a Metroidvania section in the middle. It also has a lot of comedy despite how it looks, and the music is 10/10.

I stopped playing the game after it changed to a faux-metroidvania. It was good up to that point, but it just stopped being fun.

It's almost good for the first half. Second half just isn't fun. Going through the game and then learning that you can switch between 8bit and 16bit is great. Being just a Messenger but then watching the actual hero die so then you have to become the hero is great. Everything after is tedious. And the level design isn't good so backtracking multiple times is exponentially not fun.

For a metroidvania it's average/below average. Even if it does have nice production values and good ideas.

It's an interesting, somewhat non-conventional game. Basic gameplay but makes up for it with a pretty unique "voice" so to speak. Actually made me laugh at times, which was impressive, these games usually go to far into wacky/meme humor.

It's nothing like NG outside of the ninja MC and the hilariously bad super weapon

I'm just gonna say the composer isn't nearly as experienced with the Genesis soundfont and it really shows. Most of the 16bit versions lack much of the 'oomph', the impact and slap of the 8bit originals. Just compare the swap level, fuck
