It's because the way the artist draws eyes with tiny pupils and flat colors for irises, which become more prominent with the characters with larger eyes, since the pupils stay the same size. None of the master class cav units have a sword prf they are all lance plus one of the magics, bow or axe.

There's nothing stopping you from using a sword though. It just won't be efficient.
